Question

Has anyone in here had any problems with their starter? It sounds like mine has started to make a funny noise and starts the car a little slower than normal like it might be struggling a little. Has anyone replaced their starter? How hard is it to do? or should I leave that up to my mechanic?

Thanks guys,

The starter in the 400 is in the middle of the engine under the intake manifold. I would only take this one to the dealer or a lexus repair shop. As the car gets older things (connectors and hoses) get really brittle. Its would be a tough job for your average mechanic. It should run you between $800-1,100 to get the job done.

Hello,

If you have a SC300, the starter will be on the left side of the engine, or on your right hand. A good test, is to disconnect the igniter from the distributor. Then have some one start the car and listen to the starter. Because your igniter is not connected the car will not start. Another thing you could do is to check for the starting voltage and amperage.

he is talking about the SC400 starter. BTW you can get a cheaper starter at a discount auto store. The Starter is very difficult to replace. I would take to the dealer or plan to spend a whole weekend if you are a DYselfer.
