Miles to Empty Algorhythm

Related to my other current thread about the Miles Per Gallon calculator: How is the "miles to empty" calculation made? Do we know? Does it take the most current "miles per gallon since last reset" reading and multiply that by the capacity of the fuel tank? I suspect there's more to it than that, or that there may even be a fudge factor, especially as you get closer to empty. But upon fill-up, what are the inputs for the "Miles To Empty" calculation displayed, if known or guesstimated?

EDIT: Oops I see I misspelled "Algorithm" in my subject title. Not sure how to fix that! Hopefully the moderators will.

It probably calculates based on much more driving history than the last tank. Regardless, it's usually underestimated based on my experience.
