Yeah. I feel like it acts just like the automatic high beams. It only has a straight line of sight so any oncoming cars that are turning or are at a bend at the road that you can see the computer won't recognize until it goes right into the straight line of sight.

I had no idea this would be the exact case in this scenario but it makes sense.

That's good to know. Thanks.

Now that can't make you happy. Glad no one was hurt, although I bet shaken up. Looks kind of bad but I'm sure there is nothing there that can't be fixed like new. The grill held up pretty well considering. I would have guessed it would have just exploded or ripped right off.

Guess you are going to a place you know to get her fixed up?

BTW, I bet Front-Cross-Traffic Alert would have prevented the accident. The '18 LS is equipped with this: https://lexusenthusiast.com/2017/06/...-new-ls-sedan/

Front Cross Traffic Alert (FCTA)

To help prevent collisions at intersections, FCTA is meant to detect forward cross-traffic vehicles. It uses forward direction radar and is the first in the world to alert drivers of the oncoming vehicle’s direction. Alerts are displayed using the LS’s HUD, and should the driver ignore this message, warnings are also issued by a buzzer and the LS’s multi-information display.

Quite unfortunate. Glad to hear No one got hurt.
I'm surprised no airbags deployed though because it seemed to be a significant impact on the front end from the picture.

I had the same thought when I first saw the RX. It must have just missed the airbag sensor.

Boy oh boy, I sure hate to see that damage on your vehicle - but am glad everyone is ok. sigh...about a month ago I swiped a mailbox (was backing up in the dark, the sensors didn't catch it) and I felt like it was the end of the world for a couple of days. Small potatoes compared to those pictures.

Hope it gets fixed for you guys soon!

More specifically, perhaps the radar didn't pick up the object (Rav4) because of the angle the radar signal would bounce back totally missing the receiver.
What do you think?

Glad no one was hurt ! You are right, it was the angle as ALL 4 SENSORS must detect the obstacle for the auto braking to be activated.

As for our rental, we have a '17 Grand Cherokee. Some quick pros and cons:

PROS:
1. Better fuel economy than the RX by about 15% under same conditions.
2. Boxy rear cargo area gives more flexibility with certain bulky items.
3. Triple-sealed side glass. Explains the very near RX-like quiet ride.
4. Easy ingress/egress (feels a touch taller than the RX)
5. Good initial suspension impact absorption (17" high profile tires help)

CONS:
1. Cheap plastics: A little heat from the sun and the center stack creaks upon the slightest touch. Creaking overhead console seems to have come from a Grand Caravan.
2. Poor Fit: Uneven exterior panel gaps, misaligned interior console trim, etc.
3. The 3.6L Pentastar V6 gets a little coarse at higher RPMs.
4. Cheap hollow metallic door-slam sound
5. Power/acceleration/responsiveness not as good as the RX.
6. Seat padding thin and beginning to show signs of lobsided wear.
7. Ride motions are bouncy at higher speed on uneven pavement. RX's AVS shows the difference here in controlling body motions.

Geez! Those panel gaps inside and outside are terrible and would drive me crazy if I owned the car.

My only worry about the system is I was in a long sweeping turn and when a car came from the opposing side the red warning light came on for a split second. I got to thinking that if the RX would have done the emergency braking thing, it could have sent me sliding into the opposing lane and CAUSED an accident. It did not happen so maybe Lexus has this handled.

Also yesterday was trying to back out of a parking space and my RX kept slamming on the brakes because it noticed movement from other vehicles. I knew they were there but there was room for me to pull out but it kept slamming on the brakes! It was funny to watch.

Default Update - Repair COST is in!!!

UPDATE. Got the call from CarStar.

SHOCKING even as I'm writing this.

REPAIR COST all in incl taxes, $29K. Not a typo. $29,000 !!

Had to validate some of the parts myself and indeed, parts are costly and make up most of the cost. $4K just for one headlamp!

And this is all just cosmetic, no structural damage. WOW!
