Yeah. I feel like it acts just like the automatic high beams. It only has a straight line of sight so any oncoming cars that are turning or are at a bend at the road that you can see the computer won't recognize until it goes right into the straight line of sight.
I had no idea this would be the exact case in this scenario but it makes sense.
i have confidence in the system as I have 1st hand witnessed it working and saved me from a rear ending the vehicle in front of me. The vehicle in the OP's case was coming from the side and not detected as an obstacle in front of the vehicle. I suspect nothing would have detected it and stopped the vehicle.
Now that can't make you happy. Glad no one was hurt, although I bet shaken up. Looks kind of bad but I'm sure there is nothing there that can't be fixed like new. The grill held up pretty well considering. I would have guessed it would have just exploded or ripped right off.

I had the same thought when I first saw the RX. It must have just missed the airbag sensor.
Boy oh boy, I sure hate to see that damage on your vehicle - but am glad everyone is ok. sigh...about a month ago I swiped a mailbox (was backing up in the dark, the sensors didn't catch it) and I felt like it was the end of the world for a couple of days. Small potatoes compared to those pictures.
My wife is certain no pre-collision warning/braking engaged though I'm questioning how come it did not since it is supposed to engage from a minimum 7 mph. Could the rain, color of the RAV4 (silver) and specifically the angle of approach trick the pre-collision system into thinking the road was all-clear? More specifically, perhaps the radar didn't pick up the object (Rav4) because of the angle the radar signal would bounce back totally missing the receiver.
What do you think?
As for our rental, we have a '17 Grand Cherokee. Some quick pros and cons:
PROS:
1. Better fuel economy than the RX by about 15% under same conditions.
2. Boxy rear cargo area gives more flexibility with certain bulky items.
3. Triple-sealed side glass. Explains the very near RX-like quiet ride.
4. Easy ingress/egress (feels a touch taller than the RX)
5. Good initial suspension impact absorption (17" high profile tires help)
CONS:
1. Cheap plastics: A little heat from the sun and the center stack creaks upon the slightest touch. Creaking overhead console seems to have come from a Grand Caravan.
2. Poor Fit: Uneven exterior panel gaps, misaligned interior console trim, etc.
3. The 3.6L Pentastar V6 gets a little coarse at higher RPMs.
4. Cheap hollow metallic door-slam sound
5. Power/acceleration/responsiveness not as good as the RX.
6. Seat padding thin and beginning to show signs of lobsided wear.
7. Ride motions are bouncy at higher speed on uneven pavement. RX's AVS shows the difference here in controlling body motions.

My only worry about the system is I was in a long sweeping turn and when a car came from the opposing side the red warning light came on for a split second. I got to thinking that if the RX would have done the emergency braking thing, it could have sent me sliding into the opposing lane and CAUSED an accident. It did not happen so maybe Lexus has this handled.
Also yesterday was trying to back out of a parking space and my RX kept slamming on the brakes because it noticed movement from other vehicles. I knew they were there but there was room for me to pull out but it kept slamming on the brakes! It was funny to watch.
