Even if you're never going to tow anything. The towing prep option is worth every. You get a larger radiator, better cooling system, transmission and oil cooler. It is not very expensive, and adds extra protection for your car.

A great point indeed!

On the RX450h, the OEM hitch install order contains two parts plus labor:

1) PT228-48160 ($550 MSRP) - hitch itself
2) 52108-0E060 ($176.57 MSRP) - bumper trim extension (the RX350 may have a different number, because the bumper trim around the tailpipes are different than the 450h) that goes around the hitch opening.
3) Labor was quoted 3 hours ($165/hour)

My dealer also said that an electronic module had to be replaced. Likely a blinker relay.

Finally got my OEM factory tow hitch installed by the dealer on the RX450h.

What you see here are exactly PT228-48160 (hitch) & 52108-0E060 (bumper trim). Therefore no trimming or cutting around the hitch opening on the bumper. The dealership did have to trim the plastic shroud under the car, as that's what the hitch instructions call for. Also note the 4-pin connector on the hitch itself.

To install the hitch, the rear bumper cover, foam absorber, and metal beam have to be removed. The metal beam inside the bumper is actually replaced by the new hitch, which itself is now part of a new metal beam.

Also note the differences in the bumper trim piece between the hybrid and gas (in RXOwner's previous posts) RX's.

Total cost, after applying multiple coupons and sales, came out to be about $920 (parts and labor).

I ordered a 1 foot long wiring harness extension from Amazon to leave on the vehicle as getting to the plug is not that easy.

I just ordered the Curt hitch (C13272). I probably won't have it for a week or so. I have always gone aftermarket. This is my fourth RX. I can post pics, when I install it, if anyone is interested.

john221us, thanks but we have another thread about other hitches including Curtis here. You might want to post pictures in there.

Default 2016 RX450h with factory hitch installed

We ordered our 2016 RX450h with factory hitch. Had to come back to have hitch installed, and cost was $1300!!! One disappointing thing is it comes with a 4 pin electrical connection and we need a 7 pin connection.
Lexus dealer was NOT helpful and said that they would only do a 4 pin connection. Shopping around for a converter and someone to install.
Think that we will not have the 7 pin installed (drill holes in bumper for install) but just have jumper cable with temporary connection.

I just bought my RX450h F Sport a month ago, and wanted to order the Lexus Tow Hitch. A few days before the purchase, I noticed "For RX F SPORT models, the performance damper and stabilizer bar must be removed when the tow hitch receiver is installed." By this time, I was emotionally committed to buying this model, but I let the salesman know how disappointed I am in Lexus that the car and hitch are designed in this manner. Has anyone else had this issue, and has anyone found a solution that leaves the performance damper and stabilizer bar intact?

i installed the Curt hitch on our 16 RX and it went on in 20 min. No bumper removal needed. The problem is getting the factory plug to work. I heard you need a converter but Lexus doesn't make it for the 16. They made it for the previous version and I'm thinking about trying it out if they don't have one out by June of next year.

What year is your RX? Our new 2016 450h plastic trim around the hitch looks different than yours. The dealer installed ours and the cut out for the hitch is not centered on the hitch. Dealer says that it comes from the factory that way......I am not buying it. Looks shoddy. Will post pictures after I get home and take a couple.

Our 450h is a 2016. The dealership actually had to order two bumper trims (same part number) with the hitch cutout, because the cutout for the first sample was not centered about the hitch. The second order was better manufactured and centered.

Disappointing quality control from a brand that likes to beat its chest about quality control, but all is good now.
