auto door locking
It will not do that. Here is some of the things you can have programmed having it lock when you just turn off your car and walk away is not an option.

As a habit, i always just press the soft button one of the handles as I get out of the car

What car does that?
I don't dismiss the possibility that some cars do that, but I don't know of any, and I'm not sure that I would want my car to do that. At first thought, I can think of more disadvantages than advantages of it doing that.

I don't remember the model (VW???). But I've heard the story that passengers were locked inside the car when the driver went to conviennent store. And somehow the passengers could not open the door from inside. (Just imagine a hot summer day...)
My buddy just got a new Acura MDX and it auto locks when he walks away. He simply turns off the car, opens the door, steps out, closes the door, walks away, and within 5-10 secs, his car auto locks all the doors. My buddy and I were debating on features of our new car compared to each other and he won that "auto lock" battle. I am surprised Lexus doesn't have this feature. I'll have to settle for locking using the door handle indentation.

This auto lock on my friend's MDX only works when the car senses the keyfob is at a certain distance(in his pocket). It does NOT auto lock if the keyfob is still in the car.
So in your example of bringing groceries/etc.. into the house and walking back out, since your keyfob should still be in your pocket, the doors will unlock again when your hands touch the door handle. Unless you left the keyfob in the house along with the groceries, then you will need to walk back in to grab the keyfob or remote unlock.

If my car is locked and I walk up to it and unlock it and don't open any of the doors within 30 seconds or so, it will re-lock all doors.
If my car is locked and I walk up to it and unlock it and DO open any door, it will then stay unlocked.
I checked new Honda and assumed Acura would be the same. This feature can be enabled/disabled by the user.
You are right, we are talking about different things.
Lexus auto-lock feature, as you stated, is when you unlock the doors via keyfob or doorhandle WITHOUT opening the doors. As you stated, after 30 secs, doors will auto-lock.
Acura has this feature as well. However, Acura ALSO has added feature of auto-lock after you have exited your vehicle. Let's say you drive to the mall and park your car, turn off, open door to exit, close door then walk into the mall. Normally, you would press your keyfob to lock the door as you are walking away, but Acura has the feature where the vehicle senses your keyfob is at a certain distance and it will autolock without you having to even touch the keyfob. Obviously, you can lock/unlock using the keyfob if you prefer, but it is an added convenience that Acura provides for their "smartkey" no touch solution.
