Has anyone fitted a TOMS (or other brand) aftermarket air filter in the hope of improving perfromance ?

My past experience with a different air filter alone, does little to nothing. I have had vehicles with substantial modifications that require the vehicle to get more air and then it works well. But to replace the filter alone and expect anything is just wishful thinking. Even if they did give you a couple of more HP, I doubt you would feel it. Some people have stated that their mileage has increased slightly, but I have never found that.

I find the ones you can wash and re-oil are messy and just not worth the expense and effort. A good quality, clean filter is all this vehicle needs.

I've been using K&N filters for over two decades in many many vehicles. It's a convenience 'upgrade' mostly - nothing else. MPG does increase but very slightly. You do get more engine noise and slightly better throttle response. The excuse that it needs to be reoiled and it's messy does not stop aftermarket filter manufacturers from selling millions and millions every year. K&N Filter in normal condition will last you 50K before you need to clean it (or just replace it). If you drive off country dusty roads you will need to clean it much sooner. I just remove the collected debris, slightly vacuuming the filter, and back it goes.

You can purchase aftermarket air filter and change it / clean it less or you can keep purchasing OEM replacement filters. It's your preference.

PS I've also ran many cold air intakes that will pull cold air directly from the outside, these cold boxes, also provide minimal freeing of horse power. This is all you are doing with an aftermarket part - freeing horse power not increasing it, your engine cannot produce more without a forced induction.

Putting in aftermarket air filter gives you an increase of 20hp in engine sound but not the actual HP
