It does not only detect vehicle approaching rapidly. It only has to be within the sensor's programmed range.

I recently purchased a 2017 RX450h and am experiencing the same problem with the right side BSM. Left side works fine and the right only about 50% of the time. I have taken it to the dealer 3 times. They downloaded the software twice. THe current time, the service manager test drove it and it performed as it should. I suggested that he get off the highway and turn the car off and then on to see if it would malfunction. My service rep asked if I would let him drive the RX home last night, and he would call me this morning to say what he observed. He called at 7:30 this morning to say that the system only worked intermittently and he would discuss it with the service manager. I think it is a bad computer module.

Did Lexus fix the problem in any of the cars mentioned in this thread?

ALSO, I have had 2 ES300h's (current one is a 2016) and the BSM on both sides of each car work flawlessly as they should.

Thanks

My dealer called a little while ago and said that the service manager thought it was a speed thing depending upon how fast you pass a car on the right. I told him that I thought that was nonsense since the right side would be more important than the left. The service manager was going to look up the problem in his BSM manuals at the dealership. I said that if he could not find anything that I would appreciate his calling LEXUS and getting to the bottom of this.

I will post any updates I get.

GoHuskers, have you or your dealer been able to resolve your problem?

I have NOT done anything with it yet.

I left my RX450h with the dealer for 3 days. I was told that the right side BSM system works the way it is supposed to; i.e., NOT ALL THE TIME. The service manager told me to read pages 320 - 325 of the owner's manual (Whoever gets to page 320?). My 2016 (and previously my 2013) ES300h's BSM system is far superior to the 2017 RX BSM. I hope neither I nor any other RX owner gets into an accident because the right side BSM system fails to indicate a car in the right side blind spot. This is a serious design problem from Lexus.

Mine is wee bit wonky too. I do like the Lexus Safety System+, but I see it as a complement to my driving abilities and therefor I am not reliant upon it.

I don't have a problem with how the system works - it's a "Blind Spot" monitor, when a vehicle is in the blind spot it notifies me, before it gets to the blind spot you see the vehicle in your mirrors. Doesn't go over the top like say MB whose monitor lights red when a vehicle is next to you at the lights, Lexus goes off as it should because you can see the vehicle is next to you. Also the MB system will light when YOU pass a vehicle, a ridiculous situation as you can see the vehicle you're passing. The MB system just goes on too often and you'd start to ignore it.
