Default rear shocks ? 2012 RX350 AWD

Hi my father just told me that he was at lexus for oil change and they recommended new right rear shock absorber in his 2012 AWD RX350 it was originally a car that was owned and purchased in Canada but he bought it pre owned in the USA
i know the VIn starts with a J so I have heard somewhere that if it starts with a J that means it was japan built but I'm not sure about that.
I am looking at OEM rear shocks and they seem to be cheaper than buying KYB aftermarket rear shocks does it matter which ones I get for him he was 19 inch factory option wheel tire size on the car.
so like KYB would be around 67 each
and OEM the ones I'm finding are 42 and 56 but there are like 3 or 4 different part numbers I'm finding on MYLParts.com when looking
arent they going to be the same part number when its just the shock absorber no matter what side it is in the rear ?
lexus where he lives wanted 263 dollar for one side id rather him replace both sides cause he is also about to buy 4 new tires but I want to get him the correct shcosk
please help thank you

I will try to clear this up for you. Get the KYB shocks and take them to the local garage and ask them to install them. Both sides are the same part number. It should be an hour labor.

The VIN starting with J means it was built in Japan. On some of the online OEM Lexus parts sellers you can enter your VIN and be directed to the exact parts needed for your car. I like Lexuspartsnow or myLparts.

However it really makes little difference with regard to the rear shocks. That is why although Lexus makes a big deal with different parts numbers, some of them are for the stiffer F sport suspension and some for the normal vehicle. There really is little difference between Japan or Canada built with regard to the rear shocks.

Both sides of the rear take the same shock absorber. There is no left and right part number.
You should replace both of them at this time, for safety, better handling and because the other one will probably fail soon anyway.

They are also easy to install with only one bolt at each end. Your local gas station can do this job.

Just buy the KYBs online or at your local parts store and take them to your local repair shop. That dealer price for one shock is highway robbery. Do not let them do this work. Get the shock replaced then get your tires from them if the price is right.
You do not need an alignment after replacing the shocks.
Many folks think they even ride better than the OEM shocks.

Just my 2 cents -- you might ask the local shop what their price is for those same shocks - I say this because most shops will guarantee the work, including going back and fixing any problems including reinstalling, if you buy the parts from them. Yes, they may be a bit more expensive, but if you happen to get a bad shock the manufacturer may send you a new one, but the shop is not going to install it for free, as the part is on you.

Just learnt a new thing yesterday ...
At times [not always] there are different part numbers for the same item. This is done for the robots who assemble. If a human was to assemble, you simply twist a piece to use it for the other side. [This was in instruction sheet of a pair of trunk stays. Identical part for the left and the right .. the only thing I had to do was twist the ball-socket around]

Installed semi-sport KYB New-SR series (front/back).
Really nice ride! Little stiffer, but the cornering speed way better, and the sway angle correсted too.
