Water pump and shocks

Looking through a lot of used listings, it seems like these items fail every 50-60k miles

Is this right or am I being harsh here?

You are half right. The rear shocks often start leaking before 50,000. The water pump failure is rare as far as complaints on this forum.
However the rear shocks are inexpensive and easy to replace.
