I can only tell you that my transitional glasses do not turn dark when I am in the car.

You’ll note that the side front windows of your car are laminated - therefore they provide similar protection as does the front windshield/windscreen.

http://www.motorward.com/2010/12/toy...tection-glass/Toyota Announced 99 Percent UV Protection Glass

Arman Barari

Toyota R&D center has come up with a new technology which you can’t even see, but it will help to keep you healthy! They have made a new type of UV-resistant glass for front-doors of cars that blocks 99 percent of UltraViolet rays. They’ve used a new kind of UV-absorbing film to make these windows, and they will be fitted as standard on cars to be launched in 2011.

So you know, your Toyota’s gas pedal might stick and make you crash, but it takes care of your skin. Lovely!

Combined with UV-reducing windscreens, the use of the new front-door glass will result in an approximate 99 per cent reduction in overall UV penetration through the front-door windows and windscreen. Toyota estimates that the resulting sunburn protection is equivalent to that of wearing gloves while driving.

Windscreens, which use laminated glass, reduce UV by approximately 99 per cent through the use of a UV-blocking film between two sheets of glass in the laminating process. Door windows, however, generally use single-piece tempered glass that is often instilled with UV-absorbing material to achieve approximately 89 per cent UV protection.

Same here EXCEPT a couple of years ago I got new transitional glasses from overseas (not available in the States yet. I remembered it was some German brand lenses) that changed darker (but not completely) versus my old pair of glasses which did not in stock rental cars (all my personal cars got tinted windows). The older transitional glasses are not as sensitive.

I have either ceramic tints (or the new 3M Crystalline) ALL AROUND INCLUDING THE WINDSHIELD. And NO, my new transitional glasses DO NOT change colors at all in my personal cars with tinted windows all around.

I guess a good question to ask when you have to replace the windshield. Will your insurance company replace with the same UV protection?

Or another way of asking it is: “...Does the replacement meet all of the O.E. Specifications?”

After which the B.S. starts pouring out of the representative’s mouth, since (s)he has absolutely no way of knowing the answer.
