Disable reverse tilt external mirror feature

I have a 2010 Lexus RX350.

I was involved in a hit and run. I was driving, it was night time, and a F-150 pickup with extended towing mirrors was way over the double yellow line and hit my drivers mirror. He knew what he did because he sped up and I could not turn around quick enough because there were cars behind both me and him. Called the police and actually found the truck, but without a witness or without me being able to identify the driver or the actual tag, there is nothing they can do.

My vehicle has no damage to the window or door. The housing needs to be sanded and repainted, and the mirror itself is not cracked but was hanging slightly. I was able to push it back into the housing (worried it would fall off before I got home).

Problem is, when I shift into reverse the mirror drops down, but then won't go back up to the correct position and keeps (clicking) trying to position itself until I turn the vehicle off and back on again.

My question is, is there a way to disable this feature temporarily? With the holidays, I cannot get it repaired for 8 more days.

Thank you!

Yes. Simply place the L/R mirror switch to the middle or to the right. (Left position means enabled).

Good luck with your repair.

Thank you corradoMR2.

It's not my RX below, but it's the same setup. I am not sure how to set it to the middle (old RX had a rocker switch) my '10 seems to only have L & R buttons. I've had it set to the R position and they still tilt :-/

Sorry if I am missing something?

justin1203, sorry to hear about your side view mirror. See how the button for the left mirror in your picture is lit? Hit it once to turn off. That should disable the mirror from moving down when reversing. If you're feeling adventurous, you can take apart the mirror and maybe figure out why it won't return to normal position. Take a look at pictures towards the end of this thread. Basically it's a plastic plate behind the mirror. The mirror has metal clips to secure into it. The plate is held in place by a few screws. Remove it and see if there's any obvious signs of damage. Possibly something is out of alignment based on the clicking noise. Good luck getting it fixed. And karma will catch up to the pickup driver.

Thank you both so much for the replies. Pressing the 'already lit' mirror disables the tilt function like you said, which hopefully will prevent any further damage until next week. I'm thankful it was not any worse (like the housing being loose, or signal or puddle lamps not functions properly, etc).

It's pretty sad he couldn't just admit to it. I just wanted the money to fix the RX, I'm not claiming I was hurt or anything. :-/

For the record, I've had 3 Lexus vehicles since I've registered here ('01 RX300, '06 ES330, '10RX350), and want to thank everyone who contributes. I keep quiet 99% of the time and just read, but it's wonderful to be able to come to a place where so much can be learned from others and it's awesome how much knowledge is shared and how your love of your vehicles really come through in all your postings!

Happy Holidays everyone! :)
