Today I hit a German bicyclist

What we have here is an artifact of what it means to drive a bigger vehicle, there are more blind spots than if you are driving a Lexus sedan. Aids help but a big vehicle means more spaces for a vehicle or biker or pedestrian to hide and more care is required. Personally, very short people should be extra carefel when driving pickup trucks and big SUV's, visibility becomes a problem with short stature. It's up to the driver to make sure the vehicle is safe to operate for their personal situation.
