I don't know too much about the Touareg other than their reliability has been really poor. Maybe it's improving with newer models, but recent history isn't good.

Thanks, we will drive the Audi next. We looked at the Benz M 350 today and the Infinity too. We were told the Audi Q5 is much smaller but we will check it ourselfs.
So far the Benz is the best but for around $56K it may be near the top of our price.

I had a 2010 Touareg TDI and I traded for my RX450H. The Touareg was a fantastic vehicle. The earlier models did have some reliabiliity issues that were pretty much resolved by the 2008 model year. Having said that, I reluctantly traded mine after a year because I was conviced servicing would be a major problem. My dealer totally bungled one of my other diesels (a Jetta TDI). The Touareg did have an issue with one of the parking sensors and the dealer's solution was to disable all of the sensors. Using another dealer was not an option so after 30 years of driving VWs and porsche products I switched to an RX and Subaru Outback. VW gave me nice cash contribution toward another VW in exchange for the Jetta the dealer bungled so I still have one VW that I will drive till the factory warranty expires. I love the drive of the german vehicles. Lexus gives you a nice, smooth drive, reliability, and my local dealer has a great reputation. The Touareg was a pleasure to drive. Look at the Q7 TDI. A friend just bought one. It is big but nimble.

I don't know alot about the Toureg but I did drive a diesel before I bought my RX(h). I liked it alot but couldn't get past the reliability history so I didn't buy it. I also drove the BMW X5 diesel and I have to say it's quite a car but like the Toureg, I couldn't get past the reliability problems. The BMW came with a maintenance package so the longer term cost expectation was mitigated a little bit but I still wound up with an RX and I haven't had any reason so far to regret my decision.

you will get better response if you ask in VW/Audi forum. with that note, Q5 competes with RDX/GLK/X3. New Touareg is priced like a RX but its not a direct competion. Touareg competes with non luxuary brands like Highlander, CX9, and Acadia to name a few in similar CUV. I drove both and Gen2 Touareg is absoultely a huge improvement overall compare to the first Gen.If I was in a market for Touareg, I will consider paying little more for Cayenne.
