Yes, you can. However, you will not achievet he maximum power. In 2010/2011 it says the RX get 275 hp and 257 ft-tq. in 2012, using 87 octane fuel you gets 270 hp and 248 ft-tq.

I have put 89 in a few times and it does just fine.

I am not certain, but I would think that the 2012 engine and the 2010/2011 engine are the same. However, the 2012 engine is "tuned" (whatever that means) to run on 87 octane fuel. So here is my question. Can the 2010/2011 engine be programmed or re-tuned to operate on 87 octane fuel on a regular basis? Would is be something simple for the dealer to do via their magical computer or would it require replacement parts and lot of work and expense? After all the loss of 5 hp and 9 ft-tq would hardly be noticeable from a performance basis. I ran our 2001 RX on regular fuel for over eight years with no ill effect.

I believe you! That's the same response I got from our dealer here in south California. And since inventory is low right now, we decided to get the 2011 which has our exterior/interior choice of color combination.

Yes you are correct it was 7/27.
On the question of the octane change...did they change the compression of the motor for 2012?

Sounds like standard dealer BS to get you to buy from their current inventory.

Not sure about the RX, but with the ES350 it was re-rated so now the advertised HP is 268 vs. 272 previously. No internal/mechanical changes.

Announcement of a newer model is not synonymous with availability.
Perfect example is the new Prius. We were in the market for a Prius as well and when we were at the dealer, that was the same week they announced the new batch of prii.

If we had decided to wait and held our breath then we'll still be waiting up to now.

You can run 87 in your 2010, just don't expect the quoted MPG from the window sticker, or the higher HP. I personally would not do that, but it's your car.

Again, visited our Lexus dealer today & was told Dec, for the 2012 RX.
So we visited an Infinite dealer & was told Nov for them. Next to a Benz dealer & was told 2 weeks for the 12's. Guess we start there.

I have a 2004 RX 330 and have always used 87 octane. Runs fine, just gets a couple MPG less than if you run 89. But the cost difference in the fuel wipes out the savings of the extra mile or two per gallon.
