There is a great free app I found out about here in C/L. It's called Fuelly if you search your app store. You can enter the data when you fill up, or just write your current odo reading on your receipt and enter on your PC at home. I've used it just three times now and the results are below. For the record, it's within .2 of what Watson's computer says he's getting

how fast is your highway speed? if you're doing 75 and up.. forget it.
is there a lot of traffic on your city driving? that will bring down the mpg as well.
the only way you can get 30ish on an SUV is by changing the engine to a 4 cylinder.. like what Mazda is doing. the Skyactive technology.

Actually my RX 450h has long term mileage in excess of 30 mpg and weighs a tick under 5K with the hybrid system and traction batteries. Plus it's total HP output is 297 .
I will admit that a caveat is not exceeding 70mph which sucks more from any car. No way to prevent total wind resistance.

Actually my RX 450h has long term mileage in excess of 30 mpg and weighs a tick under 5K with the hybrid system and traction batteries. Plus it's total HP output is 297 .

Just refueled today. Low fuel light came one with 8 miles left on the cruising range, it only took 13.992 gal for 430 miles so that is a little over 30 mpg. However, the tank average showed 27.9 mpg, what gives? This is the second times I saw this mishaps using the same gas station but different pump.
The spouse's 350 AWD is average about 19 mpg .

Just checking, but you were reading the "after refueling" and not the "average" since reset? Seems like quite a disparity. Do the odometer readings look correct? Is the average speed close?

I have not reset the average speed for a long time and I notice it shows 33 mph for quite a while (comparing to my 350's 18 mph average speed) - I don't understand this Average Speed number at all - how does it calculate?
The last tank with 430 miles which has about 220 miles hiway (70-75 mph) and the rest are city miles.

Even when you're stopped at a traffic light of stop sign and the ignition is on it's calculating. That's the only true measure. I only use it if I'm on a trip and want to know the average speed for the whole trip.
Yes, the after refueling, NOT the lifetime average. I reset the lifetime average every 3 months and the last time it showed 28.9 mpg and it is about the same now. May be this pump stopped before the tank is really full; however, the Cruising range show 441 miles after I fueled up.
I have not reset the average speed for a long time and I notice it shows 33 mph for quite a while (comparing to my 350's 18 mph average speed) - I don't understand this Average Speed number at all - how does it calculate?

I think sometimes it seems we say we spend most of our time on a trip going 65-75 mph, as an example, but the 65-75 is more a peak not the average. The averages I've seen are usually way below what I believe I've done. (traffic, rest stops, food stops, slow cars, cops)
GoHuskers, I usually reset the two averages at the same time as I'm evaluating both averages for the same period of time.
Unfortunately, none of this discussion has determined the reason for your disparity.

The "disparity" comment was not direct at you. Your excellent mileage is well documented and I respect your efforts to get and maintain good mileage, in addition to your helping others reach good mileage.
The disparity is in the numbers GoHuskers mentioned on his last fill up.

24.6 gallons in the tank? (not likely)
Calculations:

30 MPG
14.7 gallons in the tank? (very possible)
