Sounds like the car still drives though? Did either shop look at the trans fluid?

Try what RX in NC suggested or find a mechanic to do it for you. I’ve seen it help many with the same symptoms as you.

I would do the series of three successive drain-and-fills using Toyota WS ATF. Worth a try. Many of us do it ourselves because it is truly a very easy job if you follow the process correctly.
Note “drain-and-fill” and not “flush” there is a difference.

So, it’s sitting at 87k miles with no ATF change noted.

Do you have a Japanese Specialty Shop near you to do what @RX in NC and @RadiantX45 suggests?

Maybe try that first before deciding what to do next.

Hoping for the best for you…

That's the kicker. The car drives nearly perfectly, with only a slight shudder on takeoff. The mechanic I took it to said he couldn't even feel it at first.

There are no Japanese specialists near me, but I'm near Atlanta. If anyone in the area has suggestions, let me know. Thanks again everyone.

If my transmission has an issue that I can not solve I would let an transmission shop inspect it. I go to the specialist instead on a general mechanic for specific issues.

You want to take it to Toyo Techs as they are Toyota and Lexus specialists in Atlanta. They work on transmissions.
They were top rated on the Car Talk Mechanics files site and have been around for 40 years. They will figure this out.

Well, it seem like it may not be simple solution for your transmission issue such as correcting maybe an fluid level mistake made by someone else.

Hopefully it may be something as simple as a bad solenoid in the transmission valve body. Hence why I would let an import transmission shop inspect your transmission before replacing it. Heck a transmission shop could rebuild your transmission for less money than replacing it. Most general repair shops are just going to tell you to replace it.

Yeah, I have a 2013 RX and I have always followed the Consumer Reports info on used car reliability, and I have never seen a problem with 3rd generation transmissions (or much else for that matter)...my own 2013 has never needed a single repair for anything in 12 years.

Damn, that's unfortunate. Let us know if and when you find out what could have caused your transmission to go so fast. I know a lot have mentioned missed transmission fluid change but I also agree with others in saying that it shouldn't have caused the complete failure.
