I'm in the market for a 3rd gen RX, and I need to tow a small trailer. But I'm noticing that basically none of them have a tow receiver or trailer wiring, so in guessing it wasn't a popular factory option. I'm fine with purchasing and installing an aftermarket hitch, but does the vehicle need to have the factory tow package in order to install a flat 4 trailer connector? I assume I need to look behind the bumper on the driver side to see if the factory connector is there, but is it possible to have that without the factory hitch/tow package?
If it has the factory tow package that includes the wiring which is hidden behind the rear bumper. None has the hitch installed unless someone did it after purchase. Look at etrailer.com for more info as they have great installation videos. Most of us have the Curt hitch.
The way to tell if you have the tow package is first see if there are vents at the front side of the driver side front wheel well as those are for the transmission cooler. Next look up under the car next to the oil filter for the oil cooler lines as only the tow package vehicles have the extra engine oil cooler. If it has the rubber lines they need to be replaced with the metal ones ASAP because they tend to break and all your oil spews out before the oil light even comes on! The twin shiny metal lines are the replacement oil cooler lines.
