Have you jacked up each wheel under the control arms and spun them by hand, yet? Get a pry bar under the each wheel and feel for play, and side-to-side play.

You can also do a front-to-back tire swap and then take a road test for noise.

Update...went to the garage this week. Tirns out it was the rear, left hub bearing that was bad. Put in a new one and is quiet. I thought it was tires but still made noise with winter tires.
the garage said that the fronts are starting to make a bit of noise. Looks like i'll be changing all the rest within the year.
i guess at 12 years old and 216 000 km, not too bad???

Thank you for posting your fix.
How did they diagnose the wheel bearing?

Just curious if they used a stethoscope while spinning the wheel to hear the bad bearing since there was no detectable play when you checked.

Margate. Yes exactly. They listened with a stethoscope at all 4 bearings as they turned them.

the first thing is.... this noise starts to come in at around 60km/h and clears out after 90-95 km/h.
i had thought maybe it was a bearing, but i figured the sound would be persistent at no matter what speed, right?
also when i heard the noise, i tried veering the car to the left then the right, to see if ot would get louder on a side (to identify which bearing it might be), BUT, it was the same steady sound throughout...so maybe not a bearing?
in another post, i had discussed my tires, that are now 6 years old and seem to be on their way out . Can bad tires cause this? Should i look for anything else (in driveline)?
thanks

Are you sure the noise is not a squeal that comes from behind the gliove box? I have had that for years..
Worse in cold weather. It first started at around 40 mph, then 60 mph, now both. I hope you do not have the same problem, but if you do I would love to have you tell me if you cure it. 2009 RX350 with NAV. Good luck. VickysRX.

Vicky...hi there. No it was the bearing for sure. In your case, have you checked your front bearings? Maybe the one on passenger side? Or maybe axle shaft? Not sure..

This thread had me listening for my bearings the whole trip up to NC and back approx 1,500 miles. lol
I forgot to ask, approx how long did you drive it with the bearing noise before replacing it?

Reason I ask is because I'm wondering how many miles I have before it gets dangerous if I ever
start hearing bearing noise while on the highway and a long way from home.

I'd never want to push it driving local but there are no real good options when traveling.
I'm at 156k-157k miles now and to be honest the milage scares me for stuff like this.

>>>Hi Phil, That'd depend on how long the bearing has been howling as you know its going to get worse as you pile on the miles.

I've never had a wheel bearing go out on any of my vehicles & I've had many. The only bearing that I had go out & I drove it for awhile that way, was a carrier bearing on the passenger side of a '14 st at 65k of which I changed out the axle. Years earlier I installed a torsen diff, but I don't thing that has anything to do w/ the carrier bearing. Just to add tires do make a difference as some tires make more noise as they wear as well as some just make noise from the get go. I tires on our rx were fairly quiet but wouldn't stick that great, so I swapped them out for a more aggressive wet weather tire & they do make a tad bit more noise. More stick = more friction. I run these tires @ 35lbs btw.

Felix, i was surprised too to change out the bearing, but after 12 years on crappy QC roads, i'm not surprised.
our forester was bad for bearings and were a pain compared to the lexus.
i'm wondering if also the fact i'm using steel Honda rims as my winter tire setup, are causing bearings to go out???

Bearing manufacturers would make a difference.....Yea they could sell you the cheap Masterpro w/ a one yr warranty vs a National, Precision w/ a 3 year warranty......For the front bearings that are pressed in to the front spindles, I wouldn't skimp on pricing. Yea you could get away w/ just the rear bearings vs replacing the whole hub, but since your there & your time is worth money= you could be doing something else, I'd replace the whole hub assembly= Do right the 1st time = no come backs......
