Default Dash Cam Tap in Overhead Console

Doing a hardwire for dash cam in 2008 RX350 with a "Smart Hardwire Kit" that needs one switched +12v, one always on +12v, and a ground. It's designed to operate in a low power state while parked.

Considering tapping into the overhead console wiring rather than running new wire from the fuse box. Took apart the console and tested the wires with multi meter. There are both switched and constant +12v wires in the connector going into the dome/map lights and sunroof controls. There's a red wire that is always on, and a pink wire that is switched.

Are there any downsides to tapping these wires?

The dash cam won't draw more than 2 amps and I'll probably be swapping out the overhead bulbs for LEDs so I'm thinking this should be ok and will be cleaner than running new wire up the a-pillar.

Here's a pic of the wires:

I think you will be OK, especially if you put in the leds.

To operate while parked, test red for power with ignition off and doors closed.
If you do decide to run up the pillars be careful with the side airbag sensors.

I brought my RX to a shop where they tapped into it. It's been over a year and I've had no issues.

Got it done, works perfectly.

Made some splices using 18awg copper wire and non-insulated butt connectors. These get crimped on after cutting the supply wires in the overhead harness and sealed with clear adhesive lined heat shrink.

How did you hide the 5volt USB transformer? i did the same thing, there's 12 volts running to the mirror for the auto dimming but the only cabling off amazon i could get was like 15ft long and has that bulky 5volt transformer on it i had to just zip tie to the mirror stem.

The hardwire kit I got also came with a long cable on the power input side of the 5V transformer. I cut most of it off so I wouldn't have a huge bundle of wire and then tucked it in the headliner.
