Anyone got this problem? Water gets behind the black film covering the mirror housing. It bubbles then drys out and then when it rains or the car is washed the process begins again. Today the passenger side delaminates when I got my car washed. Guy used a hose? Not sure but it was bubbling before.
Anyway I took it to a local body shop. The guy said is easily primered and painted gloss black.
Then I took it to a Toyota body shop associated with a Toyota dealer. They said it’s a special coating and they refuse to paint it.
I’m thinking I could maybe get someone to 3M (or other brand) wrap it?
I have that same sort of bubbling underneath the same material all along the base of all 4 of the windows in our 2005 RX330. And yes, they're right - it really shouldn't be painted, if you ask me.
In south Florida (where I live), that sort of thing is almost to be expected. Being in the garage at night is useful to a point, but if you don't have a parking garage at work - the sun still wins. At least I feel like when it's time to peel this stuff off I should be able to find the wrap easily enough. And I'd rather peel that off and rewrap it than try and paint faded (and usually brittle) black plastic trim, which I've done before on other cars with varying success. (One of the things I liked about the RX was the lack of the crappy flat black plastic trim - it's limited to the very bottom and also the rear bumper top.)
So yes, it sucks, and no, I don't have a source for you, I apologize. To be fair to me, though, I have a front end to rebuild on mine first before I worry about that.
But if you don't want to DIY, just use your favorite search engine and enter "vinyl wrap cars near me" and I'm willing to bet they can fix that for you fairly inexpensively. And while you're there, look at some pictures of their work - maybe you'd like to drive a rolling advertisement - you could get the whole car done.
MIne were peeling badly in S. Florida heat and just when it started to really bother me the mirror started dying.
I ended up replacing them with aftermarket on ebay and look new again.
