Tailgate Glass shattered
Much to my disappointment the Tailgate Glass shattered possibly to weather change & high winds?
Vandalism is ruled out, the glass collapsed when I opened the tailgate.
Fortunately have insurance coverage although with $250. out of my pocket,
Anyone experience this?

wow, that sucks. at least the insurance is covering it.
I've heard of this happening to various makes/model something about the layered glass and extreme mixed temps between the layers (outside glass, inside glass, and the defroster in the middle)

The Auto Glass outfit put a band aid (plastic) for now....
never heard of this happening on any vehicle.
I suppose the good news is the new Tailgate Glass should last for the life of the RX.

Interesting read...
I experienced a similar mystery in the past with plastic, the plastic piece didn't break as a chunk but crumbled in tiny pieces like dust, which was odd.
Read that plastic can decompose over time, although as far as the Tailgate Glass goes, there may have been a little crack not so noticeable on tinted glass...
then the glass decides it's now or maybe later.

That happened to a friend's older Suburban in Florida. Don't remember if it was a particularly hot day, but I passed his car in the parking lot and the window was shattered. Nothing was stolen or damaged otherwise. Think there had been a history on that model...?

Could be, particularly with defroster there. Tempered glass though, maybe it had a knick in the glass on the edge too. Tempered glass is very strong, except around its edges. Sorry to hear about it 05RX, what a bummer.

From the video above it is mentioned tempered glass could shatter within 10 to 20 years if there was a slight defect in manufacturing process.
Maybe equivalent to tempered glass with a possible defect from outdoors abuse, then add extreme cold to heat from the defroster.

I remember a few threads in the GX forums that mentioned rear hatch glasses shattering randomly.
As an aside, the physics surrounding tempered glass is interesting. Here's a video showing how the smallest piece of ceramic (from a spark plug) can shatter a window.

The Tailgate Glass finally replaced, hopefully this doesn't happen to anyone else.....
fortunately covered with insurance ($250 deductible), the final bill $1,900. including a new rear wiper motor.
$250. for the above (new) was money well spent at the end of the day.

Technically the wiper motor is a part associated with the tailgate glass, that was my argument for it to be approved by my insurance co.....
