RX300 struts question
Hi all,
I am looking at buying a RX300 automatic 2004 - it will be first experience with a Lexus or even an older car. There is a couple of issues:
1) The rear suspension struts look in a bad way
The two attachments are rear left and right - one looks worse than then other. The car is at a dealer so I couldn't investigate much and all I can see without removing the wheels.
Whats your take on these - the one with clear rust was still quite solid under the surface rust. Deal breaker ?
As I understand, I can try find original Lexus / Toyota air-based struts (crazy expensive) or go for cheaper spring based setup (?). Will there be much difference ? its high mileage so dont care about re-sale value. What you would recommend ?
2) The hood has I think had rust just below the grill before and been repaired not very well so its bubbled paint over the weld. Can this kind of thing be grinded down and re-painted and look okay or will it need a new hood ?
Thanks for any help and guidance,

I avoid used cars with rust, because you cannot tell the extent of the damage. Also, I stay away from used cars that have overheated, or a new radiator (ask why) or a new water pump, no maintenance records, and obviously a car that's been in an accident. You can tell, because you check the seams and bumpers for fitment.
It is such a popular car, another one in better shape is bound to come along. Also, if the price is unusually low, that is a big red flag.

The rust on hood is corrosion coming from under the grille . The hood is aluminum ,it can be repaired but it takes a few extra steps compared to steel parts . There is probable more corrosion on the under side of hood behind the grille .

Stay away from air suspension unless you want to convert it to non-air after purchase. I can speak from experience that it's expensive to replace. I would pass on this car.
