For the US market, that is the location for the Height select switch on those vehicles with the Performance Package and its air suspension. In the picture that is not the switch we get nor is it a blank as those RX not equipped have nothing there. So, either the picture is from an RX in another market or it is a preproduction photo. As the domain where the photo is posted, autoscout24.net, is located in Europe I am going to guess it is the former rather than the latter. If I had to venture a formal guess it would be that what you are asking about is the Height select switch in a European 2nd Generation RX.

The picture is from a european model. I'm familiar with the height select switch and indeed it looks different from this but is located in same position. In models without the height select switch this area is just blank, nothing there. But this button is visible in only few models on autoscout24 and looks very much like it's a factory installed button instead of some own customization. I could be wrong of course.

 

With no logo or label, it looks to me like something added by a previous owner. I have had that part of the car apart in the past, and there is a lot of space behind there, making that location a good place for a switch or button, although I would have tried to add a button to the button panel to the left of the steering wheel where some blanks reside, as that is much easier to get to while driving. My guess is that it rotates the license plate from normal to fake for getaways - have someone stand outside the car to see if that happens.

 

I think it's either the passenger seat eject button or the oil slick release button. Check under the rear of the car for the tell tale oil tanks and if there are none you have the PSE feature. If your headlights do a little dance when you start the car then you have the 20mm aiming system. It's most likely disarmed but it wouldn't hurt to check for ordinance.

The switch in that picture is definitely aftermarket. That being said, it's hard to say what it's for without seeing the car in person.

Though I will say that whoever installed the switch did a decent job, though they really aren't different to install. Personally, I wouldn't have a put a switch there, unless for some reason the rest of the blanks on the driver's side panel were in use, but everyone has their own way of doing things.
