Default Sunglasses Holder - source for parts

The catch that holds my sunglasses holder closed has gone belly up. Any idea where to find used parts. The dealer want $1,000 for a new upper console - ouch!

Mine ('04) broke also. The spring latch does not snap back into the locking position; it will go to the locking position if I pull it downward while the holder is open. Often it will open on its own. I have removed the module and have removed the little spring loaded lock and still can't figure out what is wrong. More lubrication, which seems indicated, does nothing. Perhaps the spring inside is broken - I can't tell as that part cannot be taken apart to give me access to the spring.
Lexus, from what I read, will solve the problem only by replacing the whole module, including the lights and garage door buttons, at a cost of slightly over $1,000.00. I can live with the bad lock for a thou. I'm going to take it apart again soon and have another look at it when I have more time.
One option would be to get the "module" as a salvage part from a junk yard, as it's pretty quick and easy to swap out the little spring loaded locking piece, and this part seems to be standard for cars from '04 to '10.
Usually Lexus parts are "over-engineered," but not this one.

tfischer, is there a 'touch' point where a very small piece of velcro could work? Seriously, a 1/4 inch square would provide enough hold for that little door.

Velcro is often a viable solution to problems like this. I'll take a look.
Thanks for the tip.

Take some pics if you do it, this problem is likely to become more prevalent as our cars age.

A pic now, of course, would be of no help, since everything looks normal.
If I find something inside, I'll take some pics and let you know if I find anything useful.

My 07 rx had the same issue. I have to manully pull the catch down and gently close the door. The real trouble is that when the door is open, it blocks the rear view mirror. Sometimes it falls open while driving. I bought a Lexus because I expected quality. My 99 honda accord doesn't have any trim issues like this.

This is one item that has not failed on my 2004, yet. The lid for the cup holder and the center console, yes. Both were replaced under warranty. And of course the new wood piece does not match the original.

If you can MacGyver a fix with a small piece of velcro I would consider that a small victory and move on. At least only you will notice.

Our 2005 GX470 Sun Glass case just dropped down in front of mirror also. I did some checking and found that the

Problem: black housing the hold catch lever and spring has broken. Not noticeable but look close and you will see you may have the same issue.

Fix: Have not found one yet, but to get the holder to stay up for now, (with upper console removed, see youtube) I drilled a small pilot hole in the side of the console with the case in the up position so that the hole also went into the side of the sun glass holder, then took a screw and screwed it through the console and holder through the pilot hole. If I ever find a fix, it will be easy to remove and no damage to the unit, but for now it is up and out of the way of the mirror.

Ours latch has not worked since we bought the RX in 2011. My wife just pulls down on the button every time she wants it to close. Guess I should be a good husband and replace the spring... Never mind!

My 02 LS had the same issue. You'd think they would have re-engineered it by now.
No issues with the 08 RX. So far!
