Default My first DIY oil change

It is a fun project but took me 1.5 hour. The cap on oil filter cartridge is SO tight. I guess the previous mechanic didn't use any oil filter wrench, instead he just tightened the whole cartridge up with the square hole on the cap. In addition, the plastic cover for the cartridge is missing!

According to carfax, my 2007 RX350's previous owner has been using the same Lexus dealer here since day 1. I swear I won't give the dealer any business.

I hope following info is helpful to those who want to try it too.

Oil filter is WIX 57047, $10.02 from ebay, Oil is 5QT Mobile 1 extended performance 5w-30. $28.XX from Walmart.

Two lessons for me though,

1, It needs more than 5qt oil, thank god I have some leftover at home

2, my oil basin is too small, I have to screw the drain bolt back while it is draining. Man, it is HOT!

Congrats. No awards for getting it done quick. So, best to just take your time. One of the benefits of working on your own vehicle, even just once in a while, is that you get a chance to look for any problems or errors from previous servicing. I have noticed bolts missing from the under carriage body trays, clips broken and such over the years.

If you like to use WIX filters, you can purchase these locally as well. If you cannot find the WIX brand there are other options. For example, the NAPA Gold Oil Filter is the same as your WIX and is made by WIX.

CarQuest Blue, I believe, is also the same as the high end WIX filter.

The oil capacity of the RX350 is 6.0-6.4 QTs. Right out of the Owner's Manual.

For Mobil 1 users who also shop Costco, there will be a sale starting on Thursday. Look in the upcoming sales brochure.

Next time buy an extra used oil container friend. If you are going to go to all that trouble, you don't want to leave any old oil in the engine. I hope you didn't screw the new filter on too tight. Next time it should not take you as long.

Citation? Superior in what way(s)? Or is this just the old "OEM is best" reasoning?

If you use Sewell as a reference for dealers, the OEM retails for around $6.50. So, depending on your dealership you will pay that or less based on what discount you get and then one must add taxes. If you order online, you have to then add shipping charges, though you may not have to pay the sales tax.
