That is real time information. It should be doing that and 0 to 90 is the range it will report. When you are coasting it will read 90 MPG. When you stand on the gas it will read a very low value.
Right out of the Owner's Manual:
(4)Instantaneous fuel consumption (“MPG” or “L/100 km”)
The instantaneous fuel consumption is calculated and displayed based on distance and fuel consumption for 2 seconds with the engine running.
The displayed value is updated every 2 seconds.
Note that an accurate figure may not be shown in the following cases.
• When the vehicle is stopped with the engine running, the display will indicate the extremely high fuel consumption.
• When the vehicle is driving down a long slope, applying the engine brake, the display will indicate the extremely low fuel consumption.
Read your Owner's Manual. It is your best friend for your RX.
What you are getting is the distance (miles) traveled per unit volume of gasoline (gallons) between the display update intervals.
On a downward slope, you can see the difference with your foot resting on the gas pedal and completely lifted off.
I have used this mode to learn how to optimize gas consumption.. and be careful and dont get obsessed by looking at the gauge and not pay attention outside.
