We just bought a 2006 RX330 and we've found what looks like a little white mold on the inside of the center console. I'm wondering if there is a way to remove the inside of the center console without removing the entire console. I've seen a few threads where some have removed the center console, so if not, I'll just use those instructions to remove the whole thing.

Best case scenario, I'd like to just remove and replace the console interior with a new part. I'm really hoping it's not all one piece...

 

Wouldn't a good cleaning take care of it? Q-tips and bleach kind of thing? Rinse, repeat?

 

As Carver mentioned. Or even take it back to where you bought it and let their recon dept. take care of it. Unless you bought it privately that is.

 

I would love to take it back to the dealer, but they're about an hour away and my schedule really doesn't have the flexibility to just run out there. We're kicking ourselves for not really noticing it. The inside of a center console was the last thing on our minds. It was a quick peek to make sure the doors opened and that's it.

I do plan on trying to clean it. My wife drives it and we have opposing work schedules, so I was thinking I would just remove the inside and clean it while she continues to drive it. I've read some folks saying on autopia that it just comes back, and some say it doesn't. I'm prepping myself for it to come back, hence the replacement mention.

 

Moldy center consoles haven't been a problem of note. If something has spilled I would think the cleaning would handle it, it couldn't take over 30 minutes to do a through job. The console slides back and forth so you would be able to see any general nastiness on the tray below that might cause a recurrence.

 

Well, just to follow up, I did a 1:1 bleach/water in a spray bottle and soaked the interior of the console, let it sit for 15 minutes and cleaned it up. My towel was black! It didn't appear to strip any noticeable amount of color from the tray. A lot of fuzz though. I vacuumed it up and everything seems to be so far so good. A close look revealed something spilled in there and obviously the initial clean up was lacking. The tray underneath looked relatively clean, so the spill must have been contained in the console.
