The new chain is definitely more noisy than the old belt.

Timing belts on Toyota and Honda rarely fail within the prescribed change timing. I bet we can get 1.5 times up to 150K.

Belts offer quieter operation and probably less resistance.

timing belts scare a lot of people. I see that on here all the time. Our engine`s are easy on TB`s,other engines....not so good. (not uncommon to see in an owners manual of another brand) spec the tb change at or around 60k.

I believe timing chains typically last the life of the engine. One less thing to have to pay for replacement- -

Not to thread jack but how often do the water pumps go bad? I am at 82k on my RX 330 and I am going to do the timing belt, and drive belt with fluids but do I really need to do the pump? Plus I am going to upgrade to the new RX in a year or less. Ideas?

Have been told by several sources that the water pump rarely fails. As a matter of fact when the dealer changes the timing belt they only inspect the water pump and do not even recommend replacing it in most cases. If you are going to upgrade in the next few years I would not worry about it.

I wouldn't do it I were you. The part is about $125, and like someone else said, they rarely fail. I only did mine because we will be holding onto it for awhile, and the pain of having to tear down the engine to that point if necessary, after just tearing it down to do the timing belt would have been very upsetting.

Was not that long ago when if you discussed replacing the timing belt you talked about replacing the water pump as well. They went together as you said because you had already pulled the water pump to get to the belt. When I was told by the dealership that I did not need to worry about changing the pump on my RX330 when it comes time to change the belt I was shocked. If anything, I figured the dealer would try to oversell me services I did not need. Later, I confirmed the same information through a different source.

I said I was replacing the water pump because we're keeping this car longer than you indicated you were keeping yours (~ 1 year). I don't anticipate replacing a timing belt again for 90K miles; that would throw our car at 150K total. I felt the chances of the water pump failing before then was high.

If I was getting rid of the vehicle in a year, I wouldn't replace it.

The water pump usually last long. If you do not hear squeaks and see coolent drops on the floor, then the pump is ok. If you can change the belt yourself I would not worry much about replacing the water pump because even if it fails, your experience replacing the belt will help in replacing the failed pump. Since most of us are not mechnical inclined and do not want to take risk, but prefer to frequent the dealer, then it is best to let the dealer do what it wants and pay for it happily. My rx is now almost 97k and I am learning how to replace the belt. I have replaced belts on other vehicles, however, here I need to learn more on removing the engine mount. Wants to know if whether engine could fall or putting back the mount would an issue. Also loosing the crankshaft bolt would be difficult without the tool that goes for $70+. But if I do myself, I will just replace the belt and leave other components such as rollers, etc, unless they show wear or damage.
