What about some Royal Purple Synthetic ATF for a change in color?

That'll work, too. This is a chart I made for ATF Type IV equivalents (that's if you have an RX300 and were looking at transmission fluids), but any of them would work well for ATF. I favor the Mobil 1 ATF.

I thought only Dexron III was to be used for PS fluid?

Dexron III is minimum requirement, can use the above as replacements for the Power Steering. Am I right?

Mandyfig,

Are you referring to the fasteners with the push button center? I have no problems getting them off and reusing them over and over. Have not had to replace one yet.

Ours didn't have the push button center. Mine looked like this which is meant to be a one time use. There may have been a design change or maybe yours were replaced at some point. Just guessing.

Mine has the plastic screw. You can easily strip the screw and I actually broke 1 and used glue. I need to get the pop up type and be done with it. I need to take a sample and go to Ace hardware, they have a ton of them.

You will need to take off the cover once in a while and it should have a re-usable fastener. This one is nearly a one time use.

From the deep purple it turns dark brown as it ages and gets sloshed around

Mine is an early production run out of Japan. The fasteners look like this:

Back on the topic of changing the power steering fluid...

Has anyone noticed a varnish coating building up on the inside of the power steering fluid reservoir over time? Had been a bit since I last changed out the fluid so popped the hood this morning and pumped out what I could of the old stuff. When I looked at the outside of the reservoir it still looked like there was fluid in there even though when I looked from above I could see I had pumped out all that was in there. Had to be a coating from some of the old stuff in the system. Made it a bit difficult to see how much I was putting back in.

Will be swapping out the fluid on a regular basis for a bit to clean out the system, however, this concerns me some about this varnish and contaminants in the system. Am not going to attempt to put any cleaners in the system for concern over damaging hoses or gaskets. Still, wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this and possible solutions?

Am considering draining the reservoir, removing it from my RX330 and then clean it out separately as best possible before reinstalling it.

Thoughts are appreciated.
