Question Front brakes bad???

I took my Lexus RX330 in for a oil change at a Lexus dealership. They told me that I needed to replace the front brakes. My suv is a 2004 and it has 42,000 miles. He said that I have about 2 months before some sensor goes out and then I will owe $100 more to replace or fix that... the total cost for the front brakes would be $437! I have a couple questions... first is has anyone replaced their brake pads on there own? How easy was it? What is the sensor that he is talking about? Is there actually a sensor that goes bad or is it just a light that needs to be reset? No offense but Im not paying $100 for them to turn off a light! Also what would be the best kind for me to purchase if I was to have my dad do them for me? I want them to last a while but I also dont want noise with them. Thanks for the help!!

Welcome to the Club.

I am not sure without more information what sensor they are referring to.

With my RX300 I have replaced my pads several times and have done a DIY on this here, https://www.clublexus.com/forums/rx3...-pads-diy.html

There is also a Haynes Manual (big auto parts stores like Autozone, Advanced Discount Auto Parts, Pep Boys) for the RX300/RX330 Highlander (I just picked up a copy myself, only about $19.95) and they do a very good job of detailing this, too.

As far as brake pads, I'd check out www.rockauto.com and look up your vehicle and order the Akebono ProAct pads for the front and rear. Good prices and very good pads. It's what I use on my RX300.

Why new rotors? Were u having issues? How many miles on the old brakes?

DIY - I did it for around $125 for front & rear pads & also flushed out the brake fluid & put in synthetic fluid. $125 for everything. That was on our '04 RX.

330 may include a brake pad wear electronic sensor. If incorporated, it is inserted/clipped on the brake pad. Once the pad wears down far enough, the sensor is shorn off and has to be replaced.

Can any one confirm that 330 uses the electronic sensor?
