Very odd. Did it happen while going under a bridge? Do you think it was completely accidental, or if there was foul play? It would take a lot of pressure to crack and even more to break the glass so I imagine it must have been a big stone, or dropped from a high distance.
Hey guys, anybody else had a sunroof broken by a flying stone on the freeway? This happened to me last week but I have never heard of this before.
Yes, the same thing happened to me in 2001 or 2002 while driving a 1990 LS400 I used to own. I was not driving under an overpass and I have no idea where the rock (or whatever hit it) came from. Maybe it was thrown by someone. It was such a big bang when it hit that I was too busy keeping control of the car to pay much attention to anything else. Replacement was expensive but my insurance paid for it.
I am not a fan of glass "moonroofs" and would much rather have a steel sunroof or no sunroof at all. I only open the interior sunshade on my moonroof to make sure that the garage door is fully open before I back out of the garage.
Did you have your moonroof cover (the thing in the car under the moonroof)
covering you from the glass that was shattered?how bad is it?
Show us some pictures of the damage
No I was not near a bridge underpass when it happened, and the bang was not that loud. I just thought that a stone hit the windshield and as I didn't see any damage I thought I had got away with it. The sunroof cover was closed but at the time of the impact no glass fell in, it just shattered, so I didn't realize until I got home. Great service from my insurance and Lexus getting it fixed though.

I had a Land Rover Discovery with two sunroofs in which my grand daughter had a slow speed roll over accident. The front sunroof entered the SUV in hundreds of pieces. The rear sunroof ( very heavy) ended up in the passenger seat. My grand daughter crawled out of one of the open sunroofs with a severe laceration on her head and glass imbeded all over her body. I was surprized to find out how dangerous sunroofs can be. Seems to me that they should be made out of lighter weight laminated glass. Not sure if any of them are? My grandaughter survived but the SUV was a total loss. If anyone had been in the passenger seat I'm sure they would have been killed or severely injured. It was my first SUV and I didn't buy another one for 10 years (roll over problems). My RX-350 is my third SUV.
