Default Programming radio station presets in RX330?

This is the same process in most every vehicle, so I'm shocked that it isn't working in the RX. Per the manual, once you are on the station you want to save, you press and hold whichever 1-6 button you choose until you hear a beep. This isn't working in ours- each time one of those buttons is pressed and held, it simply tunes to whatever station is currently occupying that spot (and given that the vehicle was purchased in another city, that means 5-6 stations are nothing but static). We've tried it 20+ times in all kinds of ways with no luck. Any way to reset them all back to nothing without unhooking the battery, or any hint as to what I'm doing wrong?

The process is exactly as you described.

1. Tune in the desired station.
2. Push one of the station selector buttons (1 — 6) and
hold it until a beep is heard. This sets the station to the
button and the button number (1 — 6) appears on the
display.
Each button can store one AM station and two FM stations. To
change the preset station to a different one, follow the same
procedure.
The preset station memory is cancelled when the power
source is interrupted by battery disconnection or a blown fuse.

Ok, I have tried these steps, but, never hear a beep, works perfectly in my 2006 Toyota Avalon.
1. Tune in the desired station.
2. Push one of the station selector buttons (1 — 6) and
hold it until a beep is heard. This sets the station to the
button and the button number (1 — 6) appears on the
display.

Any hints? Solutions?
Thanks,
Bill

My radio is a part of my navigation system, so it may be different what with AM, FM, Sirius, and disk. However, I had that problem when I would go to a channel by using "scan" and then trying to set it to a button. I find I have to locate the station with the ****, then push the button in and hold.
