My old RX 300 AWD did fine on Texas beaches - using a little judgment and staying in the firm to moderately soft areas, I never had a problem - even when the only vehicles near me were 4WD pickups with "monster truck" tires. (I eventually uprated my stock tires to 235/70-16 Michelin Cross Terrains) Watch for fresh tire tracks to give you an idea of the sand condition. If you start to bog down, STOP! Spinning a wheel in soft sand will bury you to the axle almost instantly. Drop your tire pressure 10 - 15 PSI if necessary, keep your front wheels as straight as possible and slowly back out the way you came - until you reach a solid spot where you can turn around. I'm not so willing to go exploring with my current 2WD 330. As for the white "sugar sand" like that found on Florida panhandle beaches, where it is even difficult to walk, stay clear! That stuff is beautiful, but it has a reputation for swallowing cars whole.
BTW, it's a good idea to drive through a car wash that offers a good "underbody" wash after a day at the beach - to flush off the salt that can lead to rust.
Offroad, no worries, mate! While the 330 will never be the equal of a Land Cruiser in the outback, it should do surprisingly well in light to moderate off-roading. I had the 300 AWD on fire roads in Wyoming and on trails in Colorado in the snow well above the timberline with never a problem. Just carry a good tow strap and a cell phone - in case you get complacent and overestimate your RX's capabilities.
