Question "Learning Transmission"

I have read about everyone else having problems with their transmiosions, so I started to notice some of the same things in my 2004 RX330. Made in 1/04.
I took it to Lexus (Valencia, CA), and they told me that it takes approx. 10,000 miles for the transmission to learn your driving style.
Whats up with that. I have to drive it for a year with it jerking around??? This doesnt sound right.
I have owned cars with learning transmissions before, and they learn in about 1000 miles.
What can I do? I believe my car already has the latest ECM updtae.

There have been several threads about this subject, and many different numbers have been cited. I think 10000 is way too high, though... the typical range has been anywhere from 500 to 5000.

The TSIB about the ECM update (TC005-03) doesn't offer a number of miles. Instead, it says this about it, after the update has been applied and the memory has been erased:

"The effect of the new calibration may become more apparent after several days of driving as the ECM 'learned values' are reestablished from the customer's driving."

This tells me you're looking at a learning period of maybe a week or two, and not 10000 miles.

I've never heard of a learning transmission.

The only negative feedback with my 330's tranny is when following a slow driver from the start, it jerks like a bad stick driver when shifting from 1st to 2nd. Also, when going slow over a speed bump, if you give it too much gas after going over the bump, the tranny kicks hard w/ a forward thrust.

I think the transmission wants me to learn it!?!

rxdriver has it about right.

I am not sure if the RX330 is any different in the learning of transmission from the RX300, but I reset the check engine light by pulling the #13 EFI fuse. I notice it blanks the transmission. It can drive like a race car at that point, no hesitation in the acceleration. I would recommend not driving it that way. I always take it easy for about a week, and then the learning curve reaches its apex.

Hi,

my car did around 1988 miles until now and i'm still suffering from the bad shifting.

ex. when slowing down before a bump i can feel the Trans. shifting upward instead of downward! which makes the car feel like a giant truck stopping.

the other thing is when passing the bump and need to accelerate fast, the Trans. kind of lags the response then shifts hardly and accelerate suddenly! !@#$ which gives me the impression of driving an old car with a broken Trans...! i think Lexus exagorated a bit in luxury...

I found a workaround which i feel is better with response thing.

when i shift the gear, i used to leave it in (D) position.

now, I shift it to (S) in leave it in (5th) gear where it will shift normally from 1 to 5 and 5 to 1 accordingly.

if you try to leave the gear in (4th) gear you may notice the same lag in response...don't ask me why!!!

this is my observation with my car. such practice does not guarentee the discussed result with your vheicle.

regards,
Saadma

As little as 10 seconds will work, though I leave it out for about 30 just to make sure.
