I am trying to purchase my unicorn vehicle (I really want a 2008 RX 400h with factory-installed tow package for a cross-country move with my family), but I am having trouble verifying what to tell dealers and private sellers regarding how to tell if their RX has the tow package. Apparently a bunch of RX's with tow wiring/ventilation packages didn't come with the hitch?!? This is the advice I've found so far:
1. The VIN check under "Tech" will show tow capacity at 3500 lbs.
2. According to a you-tuber, the Lexus emblem on the front is silver rather than blue, and has vents in it.
3. Or just tear out the trunk panels behind the driver side wheel well and check for the wiring harness.
Are there more definitive ways to instruct sellers on how to check? Thank you in advance!
Thanks, Leeper. I did and am still trying to explain to the dealer in a way he understands. I got the 30 amp fuse in the engine compartment fuse box in addition to the list above. Did you get something else? I'm finding Google to be difficult these days...
The hitch didn't guarantee anything, any new car that had one installed was a dealer OEM or aftermarket option from new regardless of the package or not. The easiest way is to find the transmission oil cooler on the driver side near the fog light. You will see a little "radiator"-looking unit there if it has it
AI OverviewThe easiest way to confirm if your 2008 Lexus RX 400h has the factory towing prep package is to check for an auxiliary transmission oil cooler mounted in front of the engine radiator (visible through the lower front grille) and a heavy-duty radiator.
Use these specific methods to check your vehicle:
Check the Front Bumper: Look through the lower front grilles (often near the driver's side wheel well) to see if there is an extra, smaller radiator dedicated to cooling the transmission.
Locate Factory Wiring in the Trunk: Open the rear hatch and remove the storage compartments on the driver's side. Look for a factory white or gray female wiring harness plug attached to the wall or tucked under the trim; if this plug is present, it is pre-wired for the tow package.
