2000 RX 300 Major Engine Oil Leak ?????
Hi
I have a 2000 RX300 and has a major oil leak on the front of engine passenger side in that area that happen all of sudden. If you start it and stop right away. Like a quart or more comes out and spills on the ground (literary pouring down). I have a large plastic tray under it to catch the oil and keep filling to make sure enough is in the oil pan before starting.
Had the wife just start car and see oil gushing out from under the the front exhaust manifold, the last port nearest the alternator. Right under there it looks like. Any ideas of what is there to causes this?? Cracked Block ?? Anyone seen this happen or ideas or any help is appreciated. Really hard to see in that area. Thanks

With that much oil coming out, all you need is a mirror and light source.
I am thinking a seal failure (maybe the cam). But that would generally come out of the bottom pulley drain hole. Gasket leaks are usually slow. The engine block cracking on its own usually does not happen.
Tracing has to be done in person. Once you figure it out and post, maybe then we can put our heads together to suggest the best remedy.

Hi
Carguyo7 is the winner. Had wife start it again while under the SUV. Still looked like coming out of engine under manifold. Very hard to see with so much oil. While looking after engine stopped with flash light. I see out the side of the oil filter rubber, just barely. Take off the filter and the gasket was split in half. In all my 40 years working on cars never seen this happen. One time did have a brand new oil filter fail on start up. Can split open on bottom, bad filter from manufacture.
So went got new oil and filter, and all is good.
Thanks for all the help, much appreciated.

Carguy07 is the man!
which filter did you use and did Popeye put it on?
Face and 3/4 turn is all that is needed. If you have to use a tool to take it off then it is most likely over-tightened.

2000 RX 300 Major Engine Oil Leak ?????
Great call Carguy07!
I had a similar incident with our rx300 a few years back. I discovered a big oil puddle one day and traced it to the oil filter. It appeared to have backed out!
2 weeks before, my sister had taken it to a jiffy lube. Im guessing due to the quick in/out service..the exhaust manifold was so hot that the tech put it on finger tight.
It could have been the end of the rx if it had dumped all the oil out on a long drive.

At least it was an easy fix.
My dad did an oil change on a Thunderbird back in the day and the old gasket stuck to the block. So there were 2 gaskets, and it sprayed oil like a pressure washer when he fired it up. I always make sure the old gasket is still on the filter when I do oil changes (never have seen it happen again).

Is it seepage or substantial loss? Seepage can be due to valve cover specially after 90K miles.

the valve cover and spark plug tubes use real, specific gaskets. Looks like yours are grey gasket maker from a tube
