New Toyota Harrier Soars Higher
Tokyo - TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION (TMC) announced today the nationwide launch of the completely redesigned Harrier. While refining the segment-creating appeal of the original, which was launched in 1997 as "a luxury SUV with the performance of a high-class sedan", the second-generation Harrier puts new emphasis on maneuverability and safety. It features advanced driving support mechanisms, higher functionality, state-of-the-art safety equipment and ultra-low emissions.
"Like the swift and sharp yet graceful movement of a hawk, the new Harrier achieves levels of performance that qualify it as the leader in next-generation SUV luxury," explains TMC Project General Manager Yukihiro Okane, the Harrier's lead engineer.
Better maneuverability comes from a totally new platform, new suspension components and wider wheels, while an in-touch-with-the-road steering sensation creates a truer driving feel. An electronic height-adjustable air suspension (on the top grade) features a LO mode that lowers the center of gravity to reduce roll for sporty performance on winding roads.
Nighttime visibility is improved by Intelligent AFS*1, which shifts the headlights left or right in accordance with vehicle speed and steering angle. And for use whether it is light or dark is the world's first*2 commercial application of a front and side camera/monitor system.
Also featured is Pre-crash Safety, which uses millimeter-wave radar to retract front seatbelts whenever a collision is judged imminent and accelerates the activation of Brake Assist. And all grades have been certified as ultra-low emissions vehicles under the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's Approval System for Low-emission Vehicles.
A Luxury SUV With the Performance of a High-class Sedan
The new Harrier presents excellent maneuverability, stability and a comfortable ride on par with that of a luxury sedan.
Superior maneuverability
A new, high-rigidity platform, four-wheel independent suspension, L-type lower arm MacPherson struts up front and dual-link MacPherson struts in the rear contribute to excellent maneuverability. Also featured are redesigned coil springs and newly adopted new-type shock absorbers with an improved valve structure that provide highly responsive linear dampening force from low piston speeds.
The AIRS grade, the highest grade, features an electronically controlled air suspension system. In addition to an automatic leveling function that adjusts the vehicle height to a specific level when the vehicle loading conditions change, different heights can be selected by the driver: a LO mode pursues the world's best handling performance for sporty driving, a HI mode is for driving over rough terrain and an access mode sets the vehicle height lower to facilitate easy ingress and egress when the engine is not running.
With due consideration to driving fun, the new Harrier comes with wide 225/65R17 or 235/55R18 tires and aluminum wheels for sporty performance.
Power to spare
1MZ-FE Engine
The VVT-i system, which optimizes intake valve timing in line with engine rpm and load, and the Acoustic Control Induction System-V (ACIS-V), which adjusts the length and surface area of the intake system in three stages in line with vehicle operating conditions, ensure high torque at all speeds from low to high and contribute to excellent fuel efficiency.
2AZ-FE Engine
The 2.4-liter 2AZ-FE engine with VVT-i and a long-port intake manifold achieve high torque all the way up to the high revolution range for easy handling and smooth performance.
In addition, the aluminum cylinder block, magnesium cylinder head cover and plastic intake manifold contribute to reduced weight and reduced engine friction and enhanced thermal efficiency, thereby improving fuel economy.
Transmission
Super ECT intelligent five-speed automatic transmission
Vehicles equipped with the 3.0-liter engine use the 5 Super ECT super intelligent five-speed automatic transmission for smooth acceleration.
All models are equipped with sequential Shiftmatic. The shift range can be selected by changing the position of the shift lever to the "S" position set next to the "D" position.
SUV driving capabilities
The Harrier features a ground clearance of 180mm or 185mm (depending on the grade). In the AIRS grade model, the air suspension's vehicle height control function can raise ground clearance another 30mm. A 31-degree approach angle (in AIRS HI mode) and large-diameter tires provide excellent driving ability even on poor surfaces.
The four-wheel drive models feature a full-time 4WD system. During normal driving, the allocation of driving power to the front and rear wheels is set at 50:50. When either the front or rear wheels slip, such as when driving on slippery surfaces, the allocation of power is adjusted accordingly to ensure excellent drivability at all times.
Independent four-wheel-brake control-made possible by VSC (Vehicle Skid Control) and TRC (Traction Control System) (both available in 3.0-liter models)-and engine-torque control, provide excellent drivability and stability. The 2.4-liter engines are combined with a viscous coupling-type LSD.
Outstanding driving-support features
Intelligent AFS
The new Harrier features Intelligent AFS, which automatically shifts the direction of the headlights (low-beam)-a world's first-depending on vehicle speed and steering angle. When turning right, the right headlight shifts a maximum of 15 degrees to the right; when turning left, the left headlight shifts a maximum of five degrees to the left. The system enhances visibility on curves in dark driving conditions, making driving at night easier.
Monitors on three sides
In addition to a backup guide monitor that assists in reversing, a camera installed in the front grille displays the view from the front and a camera built into the passenger-side door mirror shows the view to the left, both of which are hard to directly see from the driver's seat. These views are presented, as a world's first, on the vehicle's Electro-Multivision screen. Also displayed on screen are directional guidelines, calculated by steering angle, to make navigating narrow streets easier.
Radar cruise control
A radar cruise control system maintains the appropriate distance from a preceding vehicle according to speed. It uses a laser radar sensor and steering sensor to identify the preceding vehicle and the lane.
Prestigious styling
Exterior design
The new Harrier carries on the identity of the original, but features even more prestigious styling.
The front view, continued from the original Harrier, features a hood that extends forward and distinctly defined headlights to express a more-advanced styling.
The side view presents a character line that extends in an upward stroke from the beltline as if to engulf the quarter pillars, creating a sharp impression.
The rear view features crystal-like combination lights that express status and prestige, while the hexagonal rear window contributes to the Harrier's distinctive styling.
Interior design
The interior design features an instrument panel that, true to the Harrier's name, evokes an image of the open wings of a hawk. In addition, a vertical metallic panel in the center, which is divided into left and right halves, communicates a sense of cool elegance through its unique shape. Its metallic finish and the use of wood-grain panels serve to emphasize the advanced and refined nature of the design.
Optional on all models is an electrically operated three-panel Multi-panel Moon-roof that provides 2.5 times more light than a conventional sunroof.
Vehicle dimensions
The overall length, width and height, as well as wheelbase, have all been increased to create a spacious interior with a larger-than-before luggage space. At the same time, the minimum turning radius has been kept at 5.7m by increasing the maximum steering angle.
High quality and usability
Added high quality comes in such forms as soft-touch padding that covers the dashboard all the way down to its bottom edge and specially treated interior trim. Also, care has been taken to improve the operational feel of switches, and attention has been paid to the opening and closing speed of storage compartments.
Automatic air conditioning with independent temperature controls for the driver's and passenger sides is standard. The rear seat is foldable in a 40/20/40 split, enhancing the essence of personal space to ensure a comfortable environment for all passengers.
The center console, which has a storage compartment that can be opened and closed at the push of a button, features a new sliding function that allows passengers to easily move from one side of the front to the other.
Storage space below the luggage deck comes in two sections: one directly behind the second row seats with a single cover and another at the rearward end of the deck that has a split lid with a push-and-pop-open mechanism. The rearward section can be used to stow the tonneau cover, which can automatically retract in conjunction with the opening of the hatch.
The AIRS grade features a power hatch that can be opened and closed through operation of a wireless door lock remote control or switches located at the bottom of the instrument panel and hatch door.
In order to prevent vehicle theft, an optional engine immobilizer system prevents the engine from starting except with a key that has the registered ID code.
Optional on all grades is an Electro-Multivision system with DVD voice and other navigation features and a 7-inch display.
Standard on the AIRS grade is a rain detection system that uses a windshield-surface sensor to detect the amount of rain and activate the windshield wipers, setting them at the appropriate speed or interval.
Quiet ride and high-quality audio system
The new Harrier features an even quieter cabin achieved by adding a sound-absorbing structure to the existing sound insulation structure. It also comes with a premium JBL 11-speaker sound system (standard or optional, depending on grade).
Advanced Safety and Environmental Performance
Preventive safety
Excellent visibility is secured through a high eye point, and standard on all grades are water-repellant front-door glass and rain clearing door mirrors.
Vision-enhancing discharge headlights (low beam), twice as bright as conventional halogen lights and with an auto-leveling function, improve nighttime visibility.
The AIRS grade features Intelligent AFS to enhance visibility on curves while driving at night.
The front brakes feature large discs for superior effectiveness and a rigid feel. Standard on all models are ABS with EBD (Electronic Brake-force Distribution) and Brake Assist, teamed with the latest suspension to ensure excellent emergency maneuverability.
Models with the 3.0-liter engine also feature VSC and TRC.
Radar-based Pre-crash Safety
Pre-crash Safety (optional on the AIRS grade) is an innovative system designed to foresee unavoidable collisions and preemptively activate Pre-crash Seatbelts and/or Pre-crash Brake Assist to reduce collision injury. The system's Pre-crash Computer uses millimeter-wave radar to sense vehicles and obstacles on the road ahead and to determine whether or not a collision is imminent based on the position, speed and traveling course of such objects. The Pre-crash Seatbelts increase passenger-restraint performance by retracting in advance, immediately after an unavoidable collision is identified. And Pre-crash Brake Assist reduces collision speed by providing increased braking force early on in accordance with brake pedal operation by the driver.
Collision safety
Collision safety is enhanced by the use of the latest GOA (Global Outstanding Assessment)-concept collision-safety body, the integrity of which was verified in a 40% offset frontal collision test at 64km/h and full head-on frontal and side collision tests at 55km/h.
Large front seat SRS side airbags and SRS curtain-shield airbags for all seats are optional on all models.
In addition to the action of the seatbelt, all models include a driver's seat SRS knee air bag to restrain the lower half of the body (primarily the knees) and enhance the protection of the driver.
Internal furnishings, such as the pillars and roof side rails, contain built-in ribs to absorb impact, offering safety equal to that outlined in U.S. head impact protection standards.
The structural design of the front seats incorporates the WIL (Whiplash Impact Lessening) concept, which is aimed at reducing stress on the neck resulting from low-speed rear-end collisions.
A structure that limits the protrusion of the brake pedal into the cabin in a frontal collision reduces the impact of the brake pedal on the driver's lower legs.
A pedestrian-injury lessening body is adopted to reduce injury to the pedestrian's head and chest in the event of a collision with a pedestrian.
Standard on all models, the outer seating positions in the second row of seats feature a dedicated ISO-FIX*-compliant child seat anchor point.

Environment-friendly features
With a view to reducing carbon dioxide emissions, all models aim for low fuel consumption through adoption of engines with VVT-i and efficient transmissions. All grades, except some 3.0-liter models, achieve high fuel efficiency that meets 2010 standards*, while cleaner exhaust emissions allow all vehicles to achieve ultra-low emission levels of 75% less than year 2000 standards, thus qualifying for reduced taxes under the Japanese government's Green Taxation System.

New Toyota Super Olefin Polymer (TSOP), an easily recycled light-weight thermoplastic resin, with enhanced tensile strength and molding characteristics, is used for interior and exterior components including the front and rear bumpers, instrument panel and door trim.
Kenaf (an annual plant used as a source of fiber), which contributes to conservation of forest resources, is used as the base material for the door trim.
With use of lead eliminated in the radiator, heater core, wire harness coverings and elsewhere, TMC has met ahead of schedule the automotive industry's voluntary environmental target of reducing overall lead use in vehicles to one-tenth or less of 1996 levels by January 2006.

Welcab Lift-up Front Passenger Seat model
Designed to make use easier for elderly and disabled passengers, this model (Type A, Type B) comes with a lift-up front passenger seat. Type A has a front passenger seat that automatically rotates and slides down outside the vehicle for comfortable exit and the reverse for ease of getting in. Type B, in addition to the features of Type A, has a motorized wheelchair storage device that makes it easy to load and unload a manual wheelchair to and from the rear cargo space.
