I think the bigger question is what is loaded up on the top end of the motor? Better get at least one valve cover off and see what it looks like under there.
I never heard anyone mention valve adjustment and may be I missed it but I don't recall seeing valve adjustment mentioned in the maintenance schedule. Are you saying the valves need to be adjusted periodically? I'm sure mine haven't been touched for 172K miles and the valvetrain is awfully quiet.
I don't think they have to be adjusted unless they are making noise. Seems like most of these cars never need it. Honda's seem to need them every 100k or so, but they have a different set up.
