Default Engine cooling Fans

Hi guys i have a Toyota harrier 3.0l and just wanted to find out how do i tell that my 2 cooling fans mounted to my radiator are coming in? The reason i ask this is because i have never heard them click in and also i marked each fan on the blade with a pen and it seems they never move. The car doe not overheat but suffers from detonation and i am using 95ron fuel. before it reaches operating temp which is a little over the second line on temp gauge it doesn't detonate so i thought maybe it is running hot. it has never overheated before and temp gauge does not fluctuate.
Is there any way of testing or hearing the fans click in.

Turn the A/C on, the fan should come on.

Apart form the overflow reservoir level, open the the radiator cap (when cold) and see if the coolant is full.

Yes (at least the cooling is) ... unless your temp gauge goes above half.

My temp gauge goes just above half line but no matter how i drive it will not go up. the needle will just be on the other side of the second line halfway.
