My backup camera install/DIY
#16
My photos would not be of any assistance as they were for an external monitor.
But do see CARVER's install in the 2nd gen forum:

Simple test before any one posts things here in first gen is:
The post should relate to the first gen.
If relates to second/third/... then the post belongs in that forum. This keeps the data tidy and in the right location.
Informational posts and links to the appropriate threads to the other Club Lexus forum are always welcome.
If the above is not done then the Moderator has to move the post and believe me I have lost a post in the process of moving it.
By no means it is an infraction if the above is not followed.
Infractions are when a member insist on posting after being told to stop or trying to promote business (exception are the sponsors) or links sites other than CL. Gambling/pornography etc are strictly forbidden.
Hope it helps.

My son and I installed a camera in our 02 RX300 yesterday. It took about an hour. We installed this one by AUTO-VOX, $50 on . It's a 4.3" screen with an IP-68 waterproof HD wide angle camera.
Some areas where we differed from the instructions shown in this thread:
We just routed the wire from the camera right through the hole for the hatch release mechanism. There was plenty of clearance so the wire won't get pinched. We didn't need to disassemble anything here. We only had to take off the license plate to mount the camera with the 3M tape.
To connect to the reverse lights power, first I disconnected the lines going to the driver side brake and reverse lights. It's one single small white connector with four wires, two for reverse and two for brake. The reverse light wires are red with black stripe (hot) and white with black stripe (ground.) I just put the ends of the camera power wires right into one side of the connector (red with red, black with white) and reconnected the two ends holding the wires in securely. So no splicing needed. I gathered up the extra power line and the little module the camera wire plugs into and zip tied it to the wire bundle right there. This single power connection powers both the camera and monitor.
From here I only needed to remove three more interior panels: the panel on the drivers side of the lift gate, the panel surrounding the third brake light, and part of the panel just inside the rear ceiling of the cabin. The hardest part was feeding the end of the wire through the gasket hose covering the wire bundle between the lift gate and the cabin. I pulled both ends of the gasket out and we took turns inching it through, like pulling a tie string through an elastic waist band.
What I would have done differently: Once I had the wire through the gasket, I would have set up the screen and connected it, then run the wire into the panels and headliner from front to back. This way any extra wire could just be bundled inside that ceiling panel or inside the back of the lift gate. As it is, we have about 2 feet of extra cable up front between the screen and the windshield. I may take the 20 minutes or so it would take to redo it from front to back. Mounted right behind the plate and centered, just enough room to get to the lift gate handle. The cam is connected by a metal support and that can be bent slightly to get the right angle. We bent it down just a bit.
Mounted with sticky/suction mount that it came with. There's a menu button and brightness controls on the back of the screen. Great picture, very wide and very clear.

Rearview mirror backup camera
Has anyone tried replacing the rearview mirror on their RX with a backup camera mirror? Master tailgaters has one with autodim and compass.

It was advertised as having "backup camera" but when I got there the backup camera was a little pic in the rearview mirror and I didn't like it.
Maybe I could've learned to like it but I put a new radio in my current car with new backup camera and I like it much better.
