checking transmission fluid- engine on or engine off?
Do you check the transmission fluid level with the engine idling after the engine is warm say after 10 to 15 miles of driving?
OR
check with the trans fluid with the engine shut off after the engine is warm say after 10 to 15 miles of driving?

Engine idleing afer about 15 minutes of driving (all systems warmed up). Gear in Park (preferably you should have had the gear in all positions, staying at each for about 15sec). On a level surface.
Good luck in ignoring the smear on the side of the dip-stick.
