Question How to check transmission fluid level--engine running or off?

This may sound like a stupid question but there is nothing in the owner's manual telling me how to check the fluid level of the transmission. Am I supposed to check it with the engine running and in Drive or engine off? When the engine is cold and off, the fluid level is very high. Your thoughts please. Thanks.

Check it with engine off. If engine is hot check the level as it relates to the 'hot' mark on the dipstick. If engine is cold check level against 'cold' mark
