Default RX300 Engine + Transmission Issues

Hey guys, I'm new to this forum, I have a few questions.

I have a 2000 RX300 with 96k miles

The first thing that started happening was the engine would start to shake violently at idle, i brought it into the shop and the check engine light said it was a misfire on cylinders #1 and #2, an A/F sensor malfunction, and it had a lean mixture.

By some grace the car started to drive normally again after a few days, and I installed a Weapon-R Dragon intake and everything seemed okay for a while and the car drove like it was new. Recently however, the transmission started acting up, and I first thought it was the dreaded RX300 transmission failure, and it wouldnt shift into 4th gear. On the way to the shop to get the new check engine light diagnosed, it turned off and the car shifted into 4th gear and was fine.

After turning around the light came back on at a stop light and the car started shaking and would shift

Now I'm conifdent its an electrical issue just because it's very inconsistant in working or not, and the car drives fine for about a day after pulling the EFI fuse and letting the ECU reset.

I would just like to know if anyone else had had any problems like this and what they have done to solve it.

Thanks!

Welcome to CL.

I also have had a misfire and also the dragon intake.

I would get the code read again and let me know what it is exactly, i.e. Pxxx.

BTW, where are you in Virginia, because tomorrow I fly in to DC and will be there until the 2nd of Jan?

The vibration you describe sounds a lot like the problem I've had (twice) when one of the coils goes bad. Luckily they're very simple to replace. Unluckily they cost about $80 a piece new. In my cases I drove my car to work, parked in the garage and when I went out to go home at 6 or so it felt like one of my cylinders was down. At that time I didn't have a code reader and took the car to my local mech and he read the code the next morning, misfire in one of the cylinders. Since it happened to be in one of the rear bank of cyl's I let him replace it $150 p/l. The next time it happened I was sitting at a stop-light and all-of-a-sudden, the idle gets super rough. Each time the CEL came on and I could still drive the car but just barely. I thought it would die at any second but it never did. This time though I had a better idea of what the problem might be and was able to replace it myself. I've since bought a spare coil that I keep in the car, and of course, its never happened again. Go figure.
