Should be 4.1 liters or 4.3 qts for the drain and fill. However, they don't mention the front differential and its draining.

 

Just found the manual says ATF is 4.1 quarts drain-n-fill for AWD. It does not mention total capacity.

I just did my second drain-n-fill three hours ago. Got another 4 quarts out. The fluid still look dark, though improved somewhat. Given the color, I'd estimate the total capacity could be around 9-10 quarts.

 

What I found in my service manual was:

FWD:
Dry Fill- 8.25 liters (8.72 quarts)
Drain and fill- 3.5 liters (3.7 quarts)

AWD:
Dry Fill- 9.15 liters (9.67 quarts)
Drain and Fill- 4.1 liters (4.3 quarts)

 

Thanks for the info. 9.67 quarts... within range of my estimate. Not bad.

I just might do another drain-n-fill for the heck for it. The Toyota dealer sells it for $4.70 per quart, so it's about $20 a pop.

 

I do 3 drain and fills over the course of 3 weeks. I have been scheduling the changes every 6 months given racing.

My manual says AWD drain and fill to be 3.9 Liters What gives?

 

I took my information out of the big 2 volume service manual, in volume 1 at the beginning around PP-31 I think they list the volumes and that is what I got. I wonder (and I don't have in front of me), if the small owner's manual lists it differently.

Guess what, service manual and owner's manual show different figures.

 

So I followed LexMex's example and did 3 ATF drain-n-fills within a week. I drove at least 100 miles between the work.

Here's an interesting look at the fluid color: The left most came out of the first drain. It smelled bad and was brown in color. Though it looked faded red on the dipstick.

As you can see, the fluid had progressively gotten better color. The third drain looked fairly OK. The right most was the fresh Toyota ATF Type T-IV. It's in a beautiful cherry red color.

You can also see the fluid containers above with my old fluid. (Spilled some of my 2nd drain when my nosy neighbor came over to see what the heck I was doing.)

That is really interesting with the color pattern. I have been changing mine every 6 months (due to racing), but usually still has its redness/sweetness at that point.

What was your interval with your last change?

My uncle will actually reuse my ATF in some other vehicles, just like my old oil. People actually will request it over new oil due to my uncle giving it away.

 

My ATF was drain-n-filled by dealers at 30K and 60K. I don't think that the dealer actually did it at 90K. So I took the matter into my own hands.

The ATF always look fine on the dipstick. Up until 85K when it started to fade. I didn't see any color change after my 90K. Now it's cherry red on the dipstick.

I didn't drop the pan. So I don't know what my ATF filter might look like.

 

I always drain and fill for every 3 oil changes. Keeps it fresh.
