Default Cost of replacing a timing belt

Hey guys,

I have a 99 RX300 that needs to have it's timing belt replaced and I was wondering how much would it cost to replace the timing belt and drive belts. My local Toyota dealer quoted me a price of $428 and said that labor alone would take five hours!! Sounds like a rip-off to me. I would also like to know what belts are included when replacing the drive belts and should the drive belts also be replaced at 90K miles. Thanks.

If you plan on keeping your RX for a long time, then I would:

1. Replace the 2 drive belts (easily visible on the left side)
2. Replace timing belt and water pump (easier to get at the water pump now than later)

I think the price alone is not bad. I had the timing belt, drive belts and water pump replaced for about $900 USD at Lexus several years ago.

Expensive .... yes
rip off .... certainly not.
Cheaper than Lexus.

Check around timing belt repalcement cost for 4 cylender and 6 cylender transverse mounted engine.

You may need ideller(s) replaced as well.

Timing belt replacement is $500 at my local Lexus dealer. The local Toyota quoted me $420. So the quote you got isn't out of line.

Labor hour is always inflated by 100%. So the realistic time is about 2 hours, though it may be better to have a second mechanic helping out.

Agree with LexMex that the two drive belts may be replaced at the same time. I advise against water pump replacement, as Toyota's water pumps are extremely reliable and its coolant keeps the cooling system clean.

If it were a Ford or GM product, yes definitely replace the water pump, or maybe get an engine rebuild.
