Auxillary setup for RX300, need my Ipod
Hey guys, I haven't found anything that works for the 2001 RX300 without navigation but I did see the Auxillary set up on this forum. My question is, is anyone able to do it for me around the San Diego area? I am willing to pay for the service, I know nothing about this stuff so I would REALLY REALLY appreciate it if anyone could help me out and do this auxillary thing for me. I just bought my car like two weeks ago and I'm dying without my Ipod. Please email me: thasykologist@yahoo.com or message me on AIM: ThaSykologist
It would be a lot of help if anyone can help me with this, I don't know a single thing about this type of stuff so if anyone is in the San Diego area I would really appreciate your help. Thanks.

I do remember, before DTS-THX-Dolby Digital and so on, there was this tape-thing, looked like a ordinery tape, you could use to play music from external devices.
You just put it in the tape deck, and connected it with a standar stereo mini-jack.
Worked, but the sound was not exactly "High Fi"... ;o)
Next is to buy a FM transmitter.

Just tune in the I-pod by the radio.
This link got both of them.

That's the thing, the sound quality on both are NOT good. I want a DIRECT connection from my Ipod to my car stereo without having to change the deck. Music is VERY important to me and the SOUND is even more important, I won't accept anything less than a direct connection. Can anyone help with the Aux install or if there is a device to install that works for a 2001 RX300 WITHOUT navigation. I haven't seen any.

Comercially available choice is limited to Radio (FM transmitter) or cassette.
Detailed DIY instructions are posted here. All require splicing and parts gathering and folks who have done it seem happy.

Is there anyone in the San Diego area able to hook this up for me? I'd be willing to pay, or just be a slave, whichever is preferred.

amiricon, you are having the same problem as i'm having.
last february when i got my rx i used my iPod with iTrip and it was aight...but then i realize that most of the world has now gotten iTrips, so sometimes mine cut out and sometimes it plays other peoples music.
i know of a few setups, but they too are FM Modulators...they are better sound than a transmitter or the tape player, but they are not the CD sound quality that we both want. If some1 in my area knew how to do the direct setup, then i'd pay them a lot, but so far no1 does...(Boca Raton, FL).
Tomorrow I'm going to the apple store to buy the transmitter made by Monster...So i'm going to let you know how it works...
I used to have the cassette player Monster thing, but it's ****, haha....
I bet that if I had patience and time...if you set the equalizers on both the car and iPod right, maybe the sound will b better, but I cant play hip-hop on an FM Modulator becuase there's no bass...
So i'll get back to you.
ANY ONE NEAR BOCA RATON FL KNOW HOW TO DO THAT DIRECT SETUP?
please...

What level of work can you do on your own or by an installer?
Open up center console to get to the back of head-unit?
Install a switch?
Route cables?
unplug and plug connectors or splice-harness?
Procure plugs for HU?
Solder wires?

The Nakamichi head unit really sucks. And when I first got my RX a little under a year ago, I had the same problem you did. The only solution i found, after searching for a few months, was a JL Audio Clean Sweep. That is the only way to use an iPod with the stock head unit, and have a digital, direct plug in.
The only catch is, if you do that, you have to add an amp. And if you add an amp, you have to add aftermarket speakers. Which, after seeing how much you said you liked music, might not actually be a bad idea. The stock Nakamichi speakers do a great job, but an aftermarket set of Boston Acoustic Pro's powered by a nice amp (what i did) will completely blow them away. That's just my input.

I pretty much can't do anything lol. I have no idea about that stuff. How much are the materials by themselves? For just one input? I want to know how much the materials are so I can go out and get them at their cheapest on Ebay probably.

Dont forget the most important part "RISK"
Who ever undertakes the work has to worry about potential damage. Ppl wrongly assume the money made after the labor cost is pure profit
The amount of time is very hard to pin down as it depends on
a) Experience
b) Skill
c) Attention to details.
d) type of mod
My DYI projects always take more time due to "c" above and lack of "a" [I have not had to do the same work twice ]
The mod discussed here is more time consuming as relays have to be wired up. The mod that I did for my son [CL Audio Video Ipod DYI] takes less time. [Not only because of less connections, but mostly due to the fact that the prep work can be done in comfort on kitchen table]
I would set aside a minimum of 3 hrs.

How much risk is there? And what must the person working on it absolutely NOT do? Also, does the aux install have interference from another source and does it disable the CD changer or anything else?
