Hey guys, just wanted to get your input on a mettalic sound coming from the front passenger side wheel area when vehicle is motion. I will take a closer look at some of the issues that LexMex states above, but none seem to make a mettallic sound when the vehicle is moving.

Thanks for your time.

Is the sound based on wheel rotation?

You may have to jack up the end and try spinning the wheel.

Also a rock/pebble lodged in the tire tread will make metallic sounding clicks.

acerx300,

One other thing will make a clanking sound, and you won't like it.

Several years ago, I busted a shock on my driver's side going up Nevado de Toluca (a drive in extinct volcano higher than Pike's Peak). Luckily, I was heading up to Lexus within the next week, but my uncle could not isolate the precise area down to the cm, but we knew the shock was involved. I decided to replace both fronts.

However, that clanking sound would pop up only in motion and never in idle or in park.

there are 3 types of motion and it is at times hard to isolate each kind .

Rotation: Wheel spinning. Speed based sound.

Up/down motion: Caused by bumps and pits on the road. Suspension (struts = shocks + spring) are the source. Note when you jack up the vehicle, you change the suspension geometry.

Sideways: Steering and road conditions that move the tires. Even on a stright road and no turn action, the wheels have, side to side play.

If you can isolate the condition, you can zero in quicker or the search has to be comprehensive.

A bent sheild behind the brake has been the dominant (based on CL posts) factor. But this is rotational scraping and becomes very obvious when you jack up the wheel. This is caused by brake repairs or hitting an object on the road.
