Depends how much over...mine at hot goes all the way up to the IV on Type-IV on the tranny dipstick...no issues that I am aware of.

My suggestion on proceedure before jumping the gun and assuming your overfilled is...

As salimshah recommended;

with the vehicle having been driven to the point that it is at optimum operating temperature and now on a flat surface:

1- put the car into park
2- put the parking brake on and with the car running and your foot on the brake,
3- shift from P all the way down to 1st gear (while waiting 5 seconds in each gear, including on the way up to park again). Perform this proceedure a few time in fact...
4- once you reached park, check the level on the trani tipstick with a clean paper towel.

Mine read about 1 litre overfilled when I did not shift through the gears as indicating and was causing me unnecessary fear due to my thinking it was overfilled. Once I shifted through all the gears a few times it actually read at the top of the Hot level on the dipstick.

Try this and see if your truely overfilled...

And Yes, overfilling can cause damage over the long haul, much like overfilling the engine with oil.

First, do a cold check. Start your (cold) engine, shift into different gears then back to Park. Your ATF level should be between cold low and full.

Then do a warm check (after a commute would do.) Check fluid level and it should be between hot low and full.

ATF fluid level can vary wildly, so check several times over the span of a week before drawing conclusion that the fluid level is high.

And yes, too much or too little ATF fluid can damage your tranny, so can the wrong fluid type. Avoid no-name snake oil that makes exaggerated claims of compatibility.
