Is the engine turning over or you are hearing the starter motor spin fast without load. If the stater is failing to engage the engine, the problem is with the solonoid.

We recently had a problem with our 2003 RX not starting up also. In our case it would turn over but the car just wouldn't start. Then when it finally started it stalled immediately. The car continued to stall several times at startup. The only way to prevent the stall was by stomping the accelerator. We thought the issue might have been a fuel pump or injector problem.

We brought it into a local Lexus dealer and it ended up being excessive carbon buildup making the idle control valve stick in the closed position. The stomping of the accelerator forced the valve open thus preventing the stall. Anyways, it was replaced under warranty. Our RX has only about 26k miles. Seems a little odd to me that it had that much carbon buildup.
