Question

I'm about to purchase a set of WAAG side tubes for my Rex, but I was wondering if any else out there has added STs or RBs, what brand, and how did you like them?

All replies appreciated!

Default yes i did

i love both the side tubes and the front grill (waag).
only problem in mounting is the door crimp seam is pretty small and virtually impossible to get a good connection. I will probably end up welding my crimp seam.

Default more detail - sorry

I didn't know how much detail to go into.

the side tubes bolt onto the frame underneath but the actual weight bearing is done on the "crimp seam".

look under the doors where the side body meets the underside - the connect in a 3/4" or so flat section where the weld is. The side tubes have you drill holes in this to put bolts through. I had a very difficult time drilling this and keeping a centered hole - the result is my holes were not enough to hold the weight. I mounted them great but when I stood on them , they broke free. I still haven't fixed em yet - they look great but are just not able to hold human weight.

I coulda paid $30 to have them installed - I kinda wish I had so I could complain. I figure I'll go to a welding shop and have them throw a spot weld on the back side of the crimp seam onto the tube bracket - I'll be indestructable then.

Again, I'm confused. The WAAG tubes are "bolt-on, no drilling required". They use the existing bolt holes on the vehicle.

What year is your Rex?

Default I own a 2000

no drilling ha ha ha ha ha
it does mount to the frame using existing bolts but requires 4 smaller holes to be drilled per tube.
I would be suprized if the '01 was different. maybe you will luck out.

The installation is simple, just remove the rubber caps under the frame and install. NO DRILLING, as other posts. Took me 30 minutes for both sides.

It looks GREAT!!

Thanks malhokc.

It looks like you got the all black ones. Are the steps powder coated aluminum or are they plastic?

I didn't know they came in different color. The ones I have are from WAAG. They are from heavy duty aluminum not plastic.

Check out the following website
urbanjunglesuv.com

They have much clearer pictures of these.

Ok, I wasn't clear, my bad.

The tubes come in Black, but you can order them with brushed (clear) aluminum "insteps" or black. I was wondering if the black insteps are also aluminum or rubber/plastic like on most side tubes.

I tried emailing WAGG but they don't answer their email.

Thanks.

My mistake, I misread. I really didn't pay close attention to the steps. I want to say black coated plastic, but will have to double check.

You may want to call urbanjunglesuv.com and speak to them. They are familiar with this product and can be a useful resource.

I saw some tubes on a Rav4 that curved up from the ends and conformed to the shape. I have not seen them on a RX but was wondering if anyone else had. I have seen tubes that have no support in the middle on a Durango by Westin and they will hold your weight. Looks like ther are lots of options. I don't want to drill holes into my RX.
